The Inheritance of Loss

From: $4.25

Kiran Desai's first novel, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, was published to unanimous acclaim in over twenty-two countries. Now Desai takes us to the northeastern Himalayas where a rising insurgency challenges the old way of life. In a crumbling, isolated house at the foot of Mount Kanchenjunga lives an embittered old judge who wants to retire in peace when his orphaned granddaughter Sai arrives on his doorstep. The judge's chatty cook watches over her, but his thoughts are mostly with his son, Biju, hopscotching from one New York restaurant job to another, trying to stay a step ahead of the INS, forced to consider his country's place in the world. When a Nepalese insurgency in the mountains threatens Sai's new-sprung romance with her handsome Nepali tutor and causes their lives to descend into chaos, they, too, are forced to confront their colliding interests. The nation fights itself. The cook witnesses the hierarchy being overturned and discarded. The judge must revisit his past, his own role in this grasping world of conflicting desires-every moment holding out the possibility for hope or betrayal. A novel of depth and emotion, Desai's second, long-awaited novel fulfills the grand promise established by her first.

At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 23, 2008 Type: User Review Well conceived, poorly executed

Well conceived, poorly executed. The writing style feels like a first draft. The historical significance is portrayed in shambolic fashion. Our book club gave a poor rating, with many declining to finish the reading the novel.

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 16, 2008 Type: User Review Powerful, realistic

A powerful novel, which kept me up reading every night. At once so many dimensions-a political novel, tackling issues of class, prejudice and race; one of the few works portraying the realities of the illegal immigrant underclass in America-and...

The criteria for the award this won, must be how gross you can get. This book was assigned for Eng World Lit at Tennessee Technological University by teacher, Linda J. Null. She also assigned another gross book, that the chair for the English...

From: Amazon Posted: May 23, 2008 Type: User Review A series of poetic still lifes

Desai has a wonderful way with words, both poetic descriptions and dialogue. The book describes a time of conflict and even revolution in India. So what could possibly go wrong?
There is almost no sense of motion in the book. A scene is...

From: Amazon Posted: May 14, 2008 Type: User Review A bore...

One wonders how some of these litterary prizes are awarded? Political correctness (by a woman, concerning minorities, etc) seems to be the norm. Or is it that the jury wants to show that THEY understand what's great and show us the public that we...
