The Alchemist (Plus)

My Heart Is Afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky."Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams."

Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.

The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.

The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

Profoundly insipid

Profoundly vapid, insipid, merit-less, pseudo-spiritual tripe. If Cinderella is your idea of a good read, this will appeal to you. Could have been written in the time it takes to read. Next to this, the Harry Potter series merits a Nobel. Humor, plotting, character development, intelligence,...

An eye opener

In my search for the universal truth of the universe an my own believes, i bumped in to The Alchemist. I was inspired, thrilled, and most of all it was a great "eye opener" for me, as the story, which was brilliant written, tuched som subjects of nature that spoke to me.I can highly recommend...

Philosophy and fable taken from most major religions

I had heard about this book for years and how life changing it was and how deep the philosphical implications to the book were. After finally reading it, I wouldn't say it is "life changing" so much as "inspirational." If you are religious at all, whatever religion or denomination, you will...

The Omen of This Book

Personally, I like this book a lot.It is SIMPLE in writing but RICH in the wisdom of life.I was very surprised to find so many 3 stars or below reviews on Amazon. Why?Now I came to realize that this book is a test. I bet that more likely than not those who gave it 3 or less stars are...

Elegant, heartwarning and enjoyable to read. Life lessons Included.

Every once in a while you can read a book that helps you grow as a person while at the same time being an enjoyable read, a fictional book. It makes finding the "self-help" a fun process, and offers a lot of enjoyable reflection and thinking topics. There is also a nice feeling that comes with...

An easy, disposable and sappy read.

The Alchemist evokes the imagination of a wide-eyed child--and unfortunately the wisdom doesn't get much deeper than that of a child, either. Interlaced within the boy's fantastic journey are tales of love, suffering, betrayal and courage, all wrapped in frivolously light-hearted rhetoric that...

A Parable of Legends

As I read the young shepherd search for his Personal Legend I found myself deeply moved by the story. It is hard not to get caught up in this simple story with personal emotion. This is a creative work of art about finding and fulfilling your dreams. I'll definitely be recommending it to friends.

Not necessarily an attack on realism...

Several readers have posted their opinions concerning the emphasis on faith and omens serving as the primary guide to reaching one's personal legend. Some have said that the plot is too far fetched, and it negates the use of reason as a way of reaching one's destiny. However, I disagree. I do...

Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

This perhaps one of best books I've read so far during my living experience. I love the message of breaking free of complacency and following your personal legend (your dreams). I definitely recommend this book to everyone religious or otherwise."The possibility of a dream coming true is what...

The Alchemist Creates Fool's Gold

If I could give this book something below one star, I would do it. Easily one of the worst books I've ever read. Not only did I find the writing juvenile (it was worse than simplistic), I felt that the author weakly disguised his New Age beliefs behind a psuedo-Christian front. He is welcome to...
