Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel
In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, ?old same,? in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she?s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on fans, compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together, they endure the agony of foot-binding, and reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their deep friendship suddenly threatens to tear apart. more

fascinating
I read this book a few years ago. I learned a great deal about the life of women in China at the time of the book's setting. Although the women's roles were strictly defined and great distances separated them, many found a clever, secret way to maintain friendships. From the specifics of foot...

Yes!
This is one of those books that touches the reader's soul, the kind of book you feel better for having read. I don't read books more than once but this book is different. It is my favorite book and it's a gift I've given at least five times since I've read it, and recommended many more times....

Difficult to stay with but worth hanging in there
I enjoyed this book overall, but it was a little difficult to stay with at times. It's not that long, but it felt like it took me forever to read. It's definitely worth reading to gain some insight into Chinese culture.

Those Treacherous Female Relationships
A beautiful novel that delves into the terrible pain of rejection in female relationships; I found this book to be somewhat helpful to me in dealing with my own dissappointments, and understanding of how those things happened. I should maybe give the book five stars, except that the telling of...

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
I enjoyed this book from the start. It was hard to put down and so sad as well. The way the foot binding is described made me cringe, I had no idea that is how they bound little girls feet. Actually breaking the bones and reshaping the foot. This is a sad read, you feel bad for these women and...
