Revolutionary Road
"A deft, ironic, beautiful novel that deserves to be a classic." ?William Styron
From the moment of its publication in 1961, Revolutionary Road was hailed as a masterpiece of realistic fiction and as the most evocative portrayal of the opulent desolation of the American suburbs. It's the story of Frank and April Wheeler, a bright, beautiful, and talented couple who have lived on the assumption that greatness is only just around the corner. With heartbreaking compassion and remorseless clarity, Richard Yates shows how Frank and April mortgage their spiritual birthright, betraying not only each other, but their best selves.
In his introduction to this edition, novelist Richard Ford pays homage to the lasting influence and enduring power of Revolutionary Road. more

Excellent book!
This is an excellent book. My fiance and I read this together. We both really enjoyed this and it gave us something else to share. You really get into the characters and they become real to you. Read the book instead of watching the movie. The movie is not good and you will enjoy the book more....

not my cup of tea
I always try to read the book before I see the movie, but after reading this book, I can't bring myself to see the movie. I guess I am just into whiney tableaus of people who hate their life choices. Maybe it is an era thing?

The grass is always greener...
Richard Yates' novel is in part a commentary on the banal culture of suburbia in America in the 1950's, but it is so much more...while the novel is truly a tragedy, in part because of the repressive American culture of the 1950's, the true tragedy in the novel lies within the charactors of April...

Good story.
I thought Revolutionary Road was a really good story, but I have to admit, it did depress me. I guess when I think of people in the 50s, I think of them being happy to have survived the war and happy to live in the suburbs. Well, this is not the way it is for Frank and April at all. However, this...

It grew on me
I got this book because it was recommended by our local bookseller and has received great reviews from book clubs. From the opening scenes in the Laural Players community theater presentation to the (to me) surprising and disturbing ending, this book grabbed and then held my interest. The main...

Makes you stop and re-evaluate your importance
(My apologies to those who responded to my review of The Help. I believed I'd reviewed other books, but had merely commented.)After watching hollywood's version of Revolutionary Road, I was compelled to see how it compared to the original. To me, it stood true to the storyline and that was a...

Just like being a fly on the Wheeler's wall
Unfortunately, with the movie out (which I watched after reading the book and thought did it justice), it's hard not to imagine the actors that portray main characters Frank and April Wheeler as you read this story (set in 1955 in Connecticut). Fortunately, with little imaginative effort it's...

This review is for people who like actual content in the books they read
I can understand where someone would enjoy the imagery and message of this book. Blah, blah, blah. I read for entertainment, and this was NOT entertaining. You can see from my other reviews that I really enjoy the Janet Evanovich series, the Sookie series, and pretty much any entertaining new...

More than the usual suburban fare
While the subject matter didn't necessarily draw me in, I am completely enchanted by Richard Yates' writing. There is a striking verisimilitude in the action and dialogue which cuts right to the heart. I kept on reading because I simply wanted to soak up more of his work.

Revolutionary Road
I wish I had read the book before seeing the movie. Maybe I would have appreciated the book more. I just didn't find anything likeable about the writing, the story, or the characters; however, I loved the movie. Not a keeper for me. 2.5 stars.
