One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd: A Novel
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Loved It
This book is very well written, and holds the readers attention. It is hard to believe this was fiction and the author was a man. (no offense Jim) I found it hard to put down, and equally hard to be finished with it. I now have a different appreciation for the American Indian. M Becker

Fluff
Fergus clearly did much research into the life and behavior of the Cheyenne. Sadly, the device of a romance to tell the story diminished the very real trials of the Cheyenne. A Thousand White Women reminded me of books I read as a child. Some better than this. Members of my book club loved the...

A wonderful adventure.
I did not read this book, but listened to it on audio dvd. What a wonderful adventure! It is part women's struggle, american frontier adventure, Native American Indian way of life, and part fantasy, or what if...? Jim Fergus wrote an exciting, can't put it down book, but the best part was Laura...

I would give it 0 stars if I could
I am motivated to write a review in order to offset the overwhelming positive comments on this book. I read it for a book club and have to say this is absolutely the worst book I've read in a long time. The only good thing about it is the premise which is an interesting idea. However this is...

Pitiful
Someone recommended this book to me on a recent trip and unfortunately I believed her when she said it was great. I'm sorry to say, this is one of the worst books I've ever read and a very poor excuse for "historical fiction". The premise of the story was great, however, the author turned it...

One Thousand White Women
The book is an engaging historical fiction about the American Westward Movement. A romantic novel which treats all the characters politically correctly. A fun read.

Entertaining read
This book was entertaining and amusing. I am happy that I was clearly aware that it was fictional as I read it b/c I couldn't help thinking that it was a little too "sweet" at times. I would like to have seen more character development for the chief. It is an easy read, good for trips and...

Better idea than execution
There was a point in this book when I had to decide if I wanted to continue. Only one other book in the last couple of years made me think that: A Wolf at the Table. That one so brutalized me as a reader that I never picked it back up. One Thousand White Women isn't nearly as harsh--or as well...

What a horrible book!!!
This subject had such promise! Unfortunately the author turned it into a Harlequin Romance bodice ripper novel about exploited, misunderstood white women who could only find understanding by "volunteering" to become the wives of a Native American chief who was hoping to broker a cross cultural...

One Thousand White Women
It was difficult to believe that this was fiction. The characters became very real and identifiable. The story, although initially unbelieveable subject matter became real and emotional. Great story with great character development.
