One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd: A Novel
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

This book is very well written, and holds the readers attention. It is hard to believe this was fiction and the author was a man. (no offense Jim) I found it hard to put down, and equally hard to be finished with it. I now have a...

Fergus clearly did much research into the life and behavior of the Cheyenne. Sadly, the device of a romance to tell the story diminished the very real trials of the Cheyenne. A Thousand White Women reminded me of books I read as a...

- A wonderful adventure.
I did not read this book, but listened to it on audio dvd. What a wonderful adventure! It is part women's struggle, american frontier adventure, Native American Indian way of life, and part fantasy, or what if...? Jim Fergus wrote an...

- I would give it 0 stars if I could
I am motivated to write a review in order to offset the overwhelming positive comments on this book. I read it for a book club and have to say this is absolutely the worst book I've read in a long time. The only good thing about it is...

- Better idea than execution
There was a point in this book when I had to decide if I wanted to continue. Only one other book in the last couple of years made me think that: A Wolf at the Table. That one so brutalized me as a reader that I never picked it back up....
