Learn to become a better writer and a better you.

Very interesting read that offers sound, simple strategies sure to improve your writing. I especially enjoyed LaMott's tidbits that offer some insight into overcoming life's obstacles. I found an audio recording from LaMott called WORD BY WORD and played it for some of my English students at an...

BIRD BY BIRD by Anne Lamott

Bird by Bird is a 1994 book on writing and life by novelist and writing instructor Anne Lamott. This is partly a book on writing and partly a memoir - obviously, when writers write books on writing, this is not an infrequent combination, although Lamott more or less melds them inextricably...

Wonderful Book!

Lamott frames her book with the story of her then elementary school-aged brother's struggle to complete an assigned book report on birds. Lamott recalls her father's advice to his overwhelmed son--"Just take it bird by bird," he said. This is the main message of Lamott's book as well, as she...

Refreshing and Encouraging

The pressure is tremendous. To write a review of a book on writing -- the review almost has to smack of winning a Pulitzer. Well, I'm no writer, so I'll do my best. The frankness of Lamott is very refreshing. So many books on writing just cover the technical approaches and don't really address the...

Great for writers, even more important for people just trying to get through this life

I'm not sure how I heard about this book. It was one of those odd series of events that ends with something in your mailbox. I read a few quick things about it online and suddenly decided that I must read the book. I'm glad I did because this was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a...

Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life contains not only her classroom lessons, but also her whole self. Lamott's witty, honest and at times self-deprecating style is all over these chapters and...

Touching and funny

Anne teaches writing and this book is based on what she shares with her class. I love the personal stories she tells, especially about her son, Sam. Writers often talk of "voice", and I feel I know Anne through this book. I can hear her voice. She makes the serious memorable, but also funny....

Beyond the book - "Real" Life Tips

Yes, this is a book on instructions for writing, but of greater value are Anne Lamott's "real" life tips. These are "real" because they are very straight-forward, honest and humorous. Can you imagine saying to your friend, "I hate you"? You know you may have thought this at one time or another...

A cursory look at the index might have one thinking this is just another step-by-step guide to a successful, publishable writing career...with chapters neatly organized by "character, plot, dialogue..." Ever so subtley, with unexpected laughs around every turn, the first chapter pulled me in as...
