3:10 to Yuma

From: $5.15

Struggling rancher and family man Van Heflin sneaks captured outlaw Glenn Ford out from under the eyes of his gang and nervously awaits the prison train in this tight, taut Western in the High Noon tradition. Adapted from an Elmore Leonard story, this tense Western thriller is boiled down to its essential elements: a charming and cunning criminal, an initially reluctant hero whose courage and resolution hardens along the way, and a waiting game that pits them in a battle of wills and wits. Glenn Ford practically steals the film in one of his best performances ever: calm, cool, and confident, he's a ruthless killer with polite manners and an honorable streak. Director Delmer Daves (Broken Arrow) sets it all in a harsh, parched frontier of empty landscapes, deserted towns, and dust, creating a brittle quiet that threatens to snap into violence at any moment. --Sean Axmaker

At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

I wanted to see this version before the recent re-make and was not disappointed. The performances are good and the deeper emotional and ethical issues make for contemplative entertainment. The remake will have to be very good to meet the...

3:10 TO YUMA is a well crafted psychological western with the emphasis on the tense relationship between bad guy GLENN FORD, a killer and a thief, and upstanding good man VAN HEFLIN, struggling to keep his ranch going during a drought and putting...

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 18, 2008 Type: User Review Ford & Heflin try and make the 3:10 to Yuma

Perhaps due to the recent success of the remake of this short story by Elmore Leonard, this re-issue of the '57 classic western starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin was released. For students of screenwriting both versions offer an important lesson...

From: Amazon Posted: Apr 09, 2008 Type: User Review Gritty Adult and Unique Western, Still Stands Up, Ford is Exellent

Glenn Ford is at his best as he subtly underplays a highly intelligent, sophisticated yet violent outlaw that seems to move at his own pace regardless of the action of others or time or circumstances. His character, Ben Wade, is one of...

From: Amazon Posted: Apr 05, 2008 Type: User Review Hard to Beat the Original 3:10

I own both versions of 3:10 to Yuma. The remake has more action and better special effects. But the original 3:10 is more believable and has better developed characters. Both films are worth adding to your DVD library. And as usual Amazon...

From: Amazon Posted: Mar 24, 2008 Type: User Review The Original is Still the Best

Once again, in comparing the original version of a film with a modern re-make - I must conclude that less is more. In this particular case, the original source material is a short story by Elmore Leonard that bears little resemblance to either of...

This is the original 1957 version of the film made famous by Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in 2007. The original stars Glenn Ford as Ben Wade, a vicious gang leader who stops at nothing to rob the stagecoach. Van Heflin plays Dan Evans, a...

From: Amazon Posted: Feb 24, 2008 Type: User Review Better than the remake

I saw this when it came out years ago. When I saw the remake with Rusell Crow I decided to rewatch the original. I had forgotten how good Glenn Ford was in the role. Better than the remake.
