Mastering JavaScript Premium Edition
JavaScript is the most widely used scripting language for the Web and continues to grow in popularity. With this Premium Edition of Mastering JavaScript and its companion CD, savvy HTML users can learn to write JavaScript programs that will make their Web sites come alive! This is the most comprehensive tutorial and reference available, with information on both Netscape and Microsoft's enhancements of JavaScript. The book starts with everything beginners need to know and then moves on to more advanced topics, such as scripting ActiveX components, working with plug-ins, building multimedia applications, and interfacing with CGI programs. The author is a well-known Internet programming expert and has led the development of secure networks for the Department of Defense. Mastering JavaScript serves both as a tutorial that will introduce you to JavaScript and as a resource that demonstrates how to use JavaScript in a variety of practical applications. With so many books about JavaScript available, what distinguishes Mastering JavaScript is primarily its scope. It covers not just language fundamentals but advanced topics such as using JavaScript to invoke Java methods or manipulate the behavior of Netscape plug-ins; taking advantage of JavaScript 1.2 capabilities introduced in Netscape Communicator and Navigator 4.0, including the ability to manipulate overlapping layers of content and to specify JavaScript-accessible style sheets; and using server-side JavaScript and interfacing JavaScript with CGI. James Jaworski writes more for moderately experienced programmers than for HTML coders who want to expand their skills, but his writing is clear and enjoyable.

A must have for beginner Javascript Programmers
If you want to have sophisticated webpages without using Net Framework 2 or 3, then this book is a must. I highly recommend it.

Nicely done, but not the best
Mastering Javascript is an excellent book for a newcomer to JavaScript, but I find that its value for updating my previous knowledge of JavaScript was much less than I expected. The book is a hefty 1100+ pages, and they avoid providing beginner's information on HTML, thankfully. Yet the language...

Completely useless as a reference
I bought this book as a complete reference to the javascript/jscript language. Instead I got a much to broad beginner's guide. The index is lousy, which makes it even worse as a reference, and server side javascript is mostly ignored. If you want a javascript beginner's guides, sure you can go for...

Not for advanced JavaScripters
This book does not cover the details of most of the Javascript objects. The examples are good enough for beginners who are just getting to know javascript.

Easy to follow, infomative - Recomended
I'm about half way through the book and I find that is very informative, easy to follow. The one think I don't like is that it is focused on older browser development for Navigator 3. But I would definetly recomend this book to others.

Excellent "Learn JavaScript" book
Well-written, easy to follow, and comprehensive. I enjoyed reading this one from cover to cover, and learned a ton of stuff: JavaScript philosophy, operators, statements, control structures, pre-defined objects & methods, plug-ins, layers, even server-side Javascript - all good stuff. Newbies:...

Boring!
If you like tutorials to be fun as well as informative, look elsewhere. I can't count the number of times my eyelids started drooping after 15 minutes because the material in this book is so dry. Unfortunately that dryness also extends to how well you pick up the information. Unless you...

Good Introduction - Sometimes hard to find specific examples
While I found some of the examples to be most useful others were lacking in detail. In particular, I found a couple of examples where the sample covered the initial command, but didn't expand to cover the parameters for the command. When attempting to execute the command the way the book said...

Not For Beginners!
I was given this book as a total beginner to JavaScript, and it was an extremely frustrating experience. The author writes in a very dry tone that will alienate those unfamiliar with programming concepts and protocol. I've looked at the JavaScript Bible in comparison, and it seems like a far...

Don't buy this book!
This book does not cover the JavaScript language as well as the "JavaScript Bible" and "JavaScript, The Definitive Guide" published by O'Reilly. If you believe in getting the best education the first time around, look elsewhere.
