It DOES teach important fundamentals.......
Photoshop Classroom in a Book (CiaB) does teach important fundamentals. But I've discovered that working through the book on my own just didn't work well.

Excellent book. It is very clear, easy to use and descriptive. It tells you what to do step by step and gives shortcuts to do things faster and easier. If you're looking for a book that tells you exactly how to use Photoshop, buy this one!

New to Photoshop? Then start here
This was a required book for a Photoshop CS3 class I'm taking. It has proven to be a very good book for building a working knowledge of all the features in Photoshop CS3. If you are fairly new to Photoshop then this is a good book to have.

I should have bought this book two years ago when I started using Photoshop. I figured the help file plus hints and tips on the web would be sufficient to use this very complex piece of software. Well, suffice to say that they aren't.
