Man in the Air
For Man In The Air, Elling's sixth release for Blue Note Records, the 35-year-old Chicagoan has created original lyrics for compositions by such giants as saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Herbie Hancock, guitarist Pat Metheny and others close to his heart. Elling hopes that audiences will fall in love with music that he himself adores, or will rediscover some compositions they have loved and overlooked for a time. Kurt Elling: Vocals
Laurence Hobgood: Piano & Rhodes Electric Piano
Rob Amster: Bass
Frank Parker, Jr.: Drums & Percussion
Stefon Harris: Vibes
Jim Gailloreto: Soprano Saxophone
with Paul Wertico (Drums on Track 1) and Brad Wheeler (Soprano Saxophone on Track 1)

- Amazing!
Maybe it's the timbre of Elling's voice, maybe the arrangements, maybe the inspiration, maybe the poetry: This CD speaks to me! I would have given this work a perfect 5 if it were more "ground-breaking" in a strictly jazz sense, but the...

- collection of great songs
I enjoy this a lot, as a collection of really nice tunes that are well performed (to say the least.) I can't imagine having the nerve to tackle Resolution...I love Jon Hendricks and I'll bet this one is right up his alley! Kurt is an...

- good voice - lame lyrics
It's the lyrics that I can't seem to get past on this album. I think Kurt has a great voice, but a lyricist he is not. There are so many cliche's in the writing. Doing Metheny, Coltrane, and Hancock tunes doesn't please me either......

- Magical stuff, bold statement
Kurt Elling's become a bit of a critics' darling. I've been wary of him due to my afrocentric aesthetics and my general aversion from vocalists [Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan the principal exceptions]. Yet I was in Karibu books in...

- Problematic
This Time It's Love was KE's best album to date because it showcased him as a great singer of songs, and cut back on the corny side of jazz-hands vocalese nonsense that is unbearable to these ears. The butchering of Trane is somewhat...
