At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.
This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

A good scanner
It is quite difficult to set up, but it is of great performance. The low frequency edge 25MHz is too large. It have to be zero.

Great performance after complicated setup
Whether you buy this as a toy or a tool, this is not a device that is going to spring out of its box ready to use. I consider myself fairly experienced in electronics and radio-related stuff and it took me several obsessive evenings of tinkering...

BCD396 Scanner (trunking)
My experience with this scanner was mostly negative. The handbook is like reading hyroglyphics. My scanner was defective with all the promised pre-programmed frequencies missing. No matter how closely I followed the manual, I could not get it...

Comparison for BCD996tT Baseunit and this Portable Version
I've seen and used both and I would recommend getting the BCD996T instead of the portable version unless you really need something to work in the event of a power outage or without power.

This is an outstanding product. I have owned Unide scanners before, but this one stands alone. The Quality is remarkable from the outside to the exceptional audio. It comes with all needed accessories, and Uniden provides free software to control...
PROS: Display is large and easy to read. Great blue backlight also. Good volume. Easily programmable for experienced users. Wide frequency coverage. APCO25 capable. Small in stature. Easy controls. LARGE memory!
CONS: The only weakness that I see is that it is not for anyone just beginning this hobby. If you are new to the scanning hobby, stick with a more basic scanner or pay someone to program it for you and teach you how to use it.
