How To Buy The Best Desktop Lamp

What kind of desk lamp do you need? The answer to that question depends on what you will spend hours doing at your desk. From there, you can select the best shaped lamp for your needs.

Desk lamps are an essential part of any office space. An overhead light may exist inside of your office space, but these lights can often be too bright or not bright enough. On days when an overhead light simply won’t work, a desk lamp is the only sensible option. The problem with buying a desk lamp is that there are many brands, models and styles on the market. Then again, this might not be a problem at all once you determine the shape, size and features that you want in a desk lamp.

The first thing to consider when purchasing a desk lamp is the kind of work that you do. Some lamps are excellent for reading books or small text, while other lamps are ideal for working on small or large crafting projects. When buying a lamp, pay close attention to the size and shape of the lamp that you are considering.

Desk Lamp Types

Essentially, there are three types of desk lamps including reading lamps, workstation or computer lamps and crafting lamps. Before buying any desk lamp, consider the following lamp types:

Reading Lamps: Most of these lamps sit on the corner of a desk and provide a nice soft light that’s ideal for reading any kind of printed text. Reading lamps can have extendable necks, which is something that you may want to consider if you read a lot of smaller text.

Workstation Or Computer Lamps: Lights that cause a lot of on-screen glare are not ideal when working at a computer. If you plan on burning the midnight oil, look for a lamp that has been specifically designed to use with a computer screen. Computer desk lamps do not cause a great amount of glare, so you won’t have to worry about straining your eyes to see the screen.

Crafting Lamps: Most crafting projects tend to come with many small pieces that must be put together in some fashion. Crafting lamps are often larger and extendible to direct light onto the crafts. These lights can be brought very close to a craft project by pushing down on the light head. Often, crafting lamps have very large bulbs that make seeing small objects simpler.

Desk Lamp Designs

Design-wise, it’s important to select a lamp that will suit your personal style and your current needs. Gooseneck lamps, upright lamps and jointed lamps are the three most popular styles available.

Gooseneck Lamps: Gooseneck lamps can twist and turn in almost any direction. These lamps are the most versatile lamps available, though they don’t often come with very long necks.

Upright Lamps: If you’re a traditionalist, an upright lamp (also known as a Harvard lamp) is the lamp for you. These desk lamps do not bend or twist in any manner, though they are nice to look at. While it’s not recommended to choose an upright lamp as a single source of office light, these lamps do provide additional and adequate light.

Jointed Lamps: Jointed lamps can move up or down from the jointed middle of the lamp. These lamps often resemble the lamps that can be seen in dentist offices, though on a much smaller scale. While versatile and interesting to look at, jointed lamps must have a large amount of desk space in order to work efficiently.

Power And Settings

All lamps come with a power rating. This rating determines the maximum strength light bulb that can be placed inside of a lamp. Consider the activities that you will be doing at your desk, then select a lamp that comes with the strongest power rating available. It’s never a good idea to use a bulb that exceeds the maximum wattage; doing so can damage your lamp and may cause other problems.

Another thing to keep your eye on is a lamp that comes with multiple settings. This way, you can adjust the brightness of a lamp according to the project that you’re working on or your current mood. Any desk lamp that allows you to adjust the brightness is worth a few extra dollars.

You can expect to spend anywhere from $30 to more than $200 on a desk lamp. Antique lamps and designer lamps are often more expensive, while standard desk lamps can be purchased at any office store for a very fair price. Online stores can be a source of great bargains for desk lamps.

A great desk lamp can make working on any project (large or small) easier to do. Start by deciding what you will use your desk lamp for and go from there.
