The Giving Tree
"Once there was a tree ... and she loved a little boy." So begins a story Of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk ... and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

disturbing
My 2 cents: I actually remember being disturbed by this book as a child. Hadn't thought about it in a long time, but I actually felt a little upset and a little confused by the story. Seems to me the boy murders his best friend and then after killing it uses the body too. Who is the tree? I don't...

A Classic for Any Age:
A boy's relationship with a tree that has always been his friend changes as the years pass. This children's book is a lesson about the give and take in love and relationships, making it appealing for ages 4 - 104. Beautifully written and illustrated.--Reviewed by Jodi Wayne

prophetic story of entitlement
I remember reading this book as a young person and all of the buzz it created. At the age of 55, after having three adult children, I see myself as an unhappy stump waiting to be turned into a bag of mulch.

A Great Book
This is a GREAT children's book that teaches a lot about giving and realizing the cost to others when they are generous to you. My 7 year old cries everytime she reads it, and she loves it.

Not the right message for my kids
I have to say, I don't understand the rave reviews for The Giving Tree. I think the messages in children's books resonate in their little souls for years to come. I try to give them an appropriately broad and thoughtful array. I'm not trying to get too pop-psych here, but, what's the message of...

A new interpretation for a new era
This book has had a LOT of reviews. With that being said, I quickly tried to browse through them to see if my take on it had already been posted...I didn't see it. So please forgive me if this is a duplication of a previous review. I have had this book for a very long time and still read it -...

Terribly sad & distressing
This book demonstrates so many inappropriate behaviors and attitudes; it is hard to know where to start to criticize it.Teaching little boys they are the center of the universe and all the worlds resources are theirs for the taking is a horrible lesson to teach. There is no sense of consequence;...

BitterSweet
The story of the Giving Tree is bittersweet. It makes me think of our love for our children, and how many children only learn to appreciate the important things in life (or the helpful people), when those are on the verge of disappearing. It touched my heart right away.

GIVES SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
BOUGHT THIS AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR GRANDCHILDREN BUT DID NOT END UP GIVING IT BECAUSE I HAD A PROBLEM DECIDING WHICH AGE GROUP IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR. NOT A FUN BOOK TO READ. MAYBE BY NEXT YEAR I CAN MAKE A DECISION.
