Excel is cumbersome
Really, Excel does enough that 98% of users are satisfied, but if you want to get into power use, Excel is quite a pain in the drawers. It's formula structure is a pain and programming in VBA has some drawbacks such as the structure of the programs

The programmers at microsoft have really been slacking off the last few years. Since excel 97, there have been no significant improvements to the excel backbone. The only improvements from 97 to 2000 to 2002 are mostly cosmetic. You can color in...

Microsoft Excel 2002
Familiarity doesn't always breed contempt. That's a good thing for Excel 2002, since this version is just a slightly scrubbed-up Excel 2000. Although it doesn't offer many earth-shattering improvements, we still think Excel is the best spreadsheet...
PROS: Easier spreadsheet review function than previous versions; improved collaboration features; provides online storage for sharing files; new Formula Evaluator helps track down calculation errors.
CONS: Doesn't work with Windows 95; doesn't offer enough new tools or enhancements for home or small-business users.

The improvements in Excel 2002 make it one of the main reasons for upgrading to Office XP...
PROS: Cross worksheet and format-based searching Watch Window Formula evaluator Error-checking Smart Tag.
CONS: Charting engine still needs work.
