Borderlines: A Memoir

What would you do if your best friend was also your worst enemy?

When Caroline Kraus leaves behind her sheltered, upper-middle-class home in St. Louis for San Francisco following the death of her mother, she is searching for clarity and a fresh perspective to help her escape her mother?s ghost. Instead, in a dreamlike city of beatnik bookstores and coffeehouses, she meets Jane.

Bewitching and free-spirited, Jane offers Caroline the warmth, intuitive understanding, and female companionship she craves, and soon the two women are inseparable. But gradually, Caroline discovers that behind the intensity that makes the friendship so intoxicating lies a dangerous, symbiotic stranglehold. As their lives and psyches become evermore intertwined, Jane begins to reveal some disturbing qualities and pulls Caroline further into her troubled depths. And as her subtle manipulations blossom into emotional blackmail, financial ruin, alarming promiscuity, and ultimately, physical aggression, Caroline must fight to regain her sense of self, and her understanding of where Jane ends and she begins.

Gripping and unforgettable, Borderlines distills the author?s terrifying experience into a mesmerizing memoir that will hold you captive until the last page. At its heart lies an unflinching look at the potent, hidden dynamics beneath the surface of any intimate relationship?and the dangerous blurring of individual boundaries that can occur when these dynamics are unleashed. An extraordinary tale that illuminates the power of love, loss, loyalty, and grief, Borderlines is an unprecedented account of the dark side of friendships between women, and marks a striking literary debut.

*yawn*

Quite personally, I found this book to be boring. There just wasn't enough real substance to it. An argument here, a blow up there... a few instances of cutting. I think the author could have made the story much more captivating and suspenseful. If you want the EXTREME version of BPD, watch the...

A suspenseful, intense vortex of a read

I could not put this book down, as if I had been sucked into the void with Caroline. I knew it would end eventually and I had to read to that point to find out how she finalized things with Jane. I can understand much of what Caroline was sucked into as I was in an abusive relationship. That...

So Very Real

This book is an accurate book on Borderline Personality Disorder and all the struggles that patients with it go through. I was so happy to learn that I was not the only one that has the struggles. It was a relief to see an extremely accurate account of us and to see that there is a form of...

Amazing accomplishment...

I have just finished reading this book. It is amazing that a woman as young as Ms. Kraus can have such insight and wisdom about this horrific experience. The incidents of childhood deprivation, sexual and emotional abuse, loss, trauma, unresolved grief and other tragedies of life converge and...

I couldn't put this down

This memoir is a page-turner, like the cat-and-mouse of a Hitchcock movie or a murder mystery. I assumed Caroline would survive her convoluted relationship with Jane, but had to keep reading to find out how. The effortless beauty and immediacy of her prose and her subtle psychological insights...

Compelling, suspenseful read

This book was a page turner. Kraus so clearly stacks the deck against Jane from the beginning that one reads the book with a constant sense of dread and foreboding. Although that added to the suspensefullness of the book, I felt that it detracted from the complexity of the relationship. I only...

Courageous Memoir

In Ms. Kraus' Memoir, she crafts a particularly well written recount of a personal experience that to most of us seems like a total nightmare. And in addition, she is courageous in her presentation. Not many have the courage to write for the world, that they were basically a somewhat bipolar...

Totally understandable

I, like the author, survived living with a borderline, and I can totally empathize with her story. Caroline is very courageous in sharing her story, and I hope she realizes she is not alone. I too was "sucked in," and taken advantage of, although not financially, but on an emotional level....

Fact or fiction?

I question how much of this book really happened. I'm sure there was a relationship between the author and Jane, and I don't doubt Jane took advantage of their friendship. Still, I find it difficult to believe the author was so mesmerized that she gave Jane complete control of her life. She is...
