A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive
This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it." Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

It's a good book.
I don't care if it's real or not, I think of it as fiction though. It's more similar to fiction then non-fiction, despite it supposedly being an autobiography. It's not a sad book, to me at least, but it's not happy either. It's a book about child abuse, and David is a young child.I recommend this...

If you like "A Child Called It" check out "A Beautiful World" by Gregg Milligan
While "A Child Called 'It'" deserves special acknowledgement for bringing awareness of the horrors of child abuse to a huge audience, I just read a new memoir "A Beautiful World" by Gregg Milligan and I highly recommend it. It is quite different in layout and voice, and has a really profound...

Very, very poorly written and seems exaggerated
I read this book, and the sequel, because my duaghter selected it to read for class. The poor quality of the writing is almost as shocking as the abuse described. It is very choppy, bounces back and forth in the timeline, and the author tried too hard to sound eloquent. I can't believe this...

A Must Read for Everyone!
A friend told me about this book, she loaned it to me to read. I couldn't put it down, the fact that it is a true story made me appreciate even the smallest things in life. I can't imagine being that child and living to tell his story. I was so taken by his book that I read all three of his...

Wow...
A Child Called "It" is the true story of Dave Pelzer, who had a perfectly normal life with his family until his mother suddenly turned into a controlling, abusive mother. She singles Dave out from his brothers as the "bad boy" of the family and punishes him senselessly, and without remorse. She...

Think about it
I read this book when i was 12 or 13, and i don't remember all of the details of this book, but what i remember the most is the emotions i felt reading it. Of course some of the things his mother did to him stood out as exceptionally horrific and i still remember them. When you see and hear...

"It"
How anyone could be treated the way Dave Pelzer was as a child and come through life being such a solid person is beyond me. The books that followed make you know that anyone can overcome if they want to.

A little let down
I don't know what I expected, but the shock value of this book, the insight into such a tortured childhood was eye opening. The author has courage to tell their story in hopes that it will help inspire those who read it to help abused children, and to thank those that helped the author. I have...
