Speaking of Now

Throughout its 25-year history, the Pat Metheny Group has consistently had the power to reinvent itself, developing an ever-broader musical vision. Speaking of Now reflects substantial changes since the band was last assembled. The core remains intact, with Lyle Mays, Metheny's composing partner since the beginning, still contributing keyboards and some eloquent acoustic piano. Bassist Steve Rodby is here as well, but there are some new additions. Mexican-born drummer Antonio Sanchez is a creative fountain of rhythm, while Richard Bona, from Cameroon, has joined the band on vocals and percussion. There's an unearthly serenity in Bona's high-pitched vocals and they've clearly shaped some of the composing here. Trumpeter Cuong Vu's presence marks the first time a horn player has been a member of PMG, and his laconic, airy trumpet is a perfect complement to Metheny's guitar. The Group has always had the ability to fuse elements from different cultures into a graceful and floating whole, but this version sets new standards for sheer sonic beauty, like the welling orchestral breadth that underscores Bona's voice on "You." Highlights seem to abound, but the guitar solos on "Proof" and "A Place in the World" testify to Metheny's inspiration. --Stuart Broomer  more

Packed with vibrations

4 1/2This is a Metheny release of the adventurous variety, and quite a consistently engaging one at that. A bit overstuffed in spots perhaps but to me these are my favorite types of releases from one of our greatest jazz guitarists- seventy plus minutes of filler-free compositional free fall. Pat...

One of the best of PMG's recent albums.

This very clean CD makes a good companion to the more electrically charged DVD, Speaking of Now Live.Given a choice between the two, however, I think I would go with the DVD... the latter has more selections -- and more of Richard Bona, whose stellar virtuosity doesn't project through on the CD.

Not up to usual PMG standard

For the usual PMG standard, this is a disappointing album. A Place in the World (Track 7) and Wherever You Go (Track 9) are little better than others, but the rest is sub par. I can't recommend this album.

DT's on Metheny's Speaking of Now

Love it, yet compared to THE WAY UP, it's not at that level. I guess my problem is that I got SPEAKING OF NOW too late and after I got THE WAY UP. Still, Pat Metheny Group is the best!Enjoy,Diego TaylorPanama

A departure that doesn't disappoint

I'm an unabashed enthusiast when it comes to the PMG. I have 8 of their albums, having discovered the group orginally in the CD section of my public library back in 1990 with "Letter from Home". It really was love at first sight (er, listen that is).As many PMG followers know, the group's...

Beautiful, simply beautiful!

First I'd like to say that all too many of the reviews of this CD are . . . . well . . . .formulaic because too many of them use the word "forumlaic" to describe it, but each review then goes on to offer divergent criticisms, none of which support the claim of being "forumlaic." I think many...

Underrated, eloquent, embellished restatement

This recording is so easy to take for granted, at least for me. When I first bought this recording what with it following the inventive and excellent "Imaginary Day", I expected an extrapolation on the more edgy material of "Imaginary Day". What I got was a recording so rich with the group's...

Liven it up

My first encounter with the Pat Metheny Group was their 2003 performance on Austin City Limits. Coming to it as a fan of classic jazz, I was expecting something modernly bland, but to my delight the show was captivating -- it was vibrant and full of new (to me) sounds and ideas and had a really...

Speaking of Now - Pat Metheny Group

In one word, disappointed. As a long-time listener, and owner of twenty-four PM, PM Group and CDs on which he plays, I was expecting more. A beautiful album cover and lots of music, "Great!" I thought. I listened to the first song and really liked it, but apart from a couple of other "high...

Listen To This One Closely!

I own at least 12 other Metheny CDs, including excellent ones such as "First Circle", "Offramp", and "As Falls Wichita....". At first, after listening to sample clips and reading some of the negative reviews on this site, I resisted buying the CD. However, one of the reviews recommended listening...
