Hunchback of Notre Dame
Lon Chaney, the man of a thousand faces, was best known for playing Quasimodo and the Phantom of the Opera. But the former role was clearly the most ambitious of his illustrious career, full of such longing and anguish. It's as though his entire being was consumed by this ugly outcast with a heart as big and beautiful as Notre Dame itself. And the makeup is still astonishing. The rest of this unrequited love story is pretty effective as well, with the re-creation of medieval Paris a standout for its lavishness. Like all great silent films, it delivers a poetry of life that is abstract and tangible at the same time. --Bill Desowitz more

- Quasimodo is not a freak
It is an old silent black and white film from 1923. It has of course been enhanced for this edition that does not guarantee it is what it was. The image is amazingly clear and amazingly well centered and framed. Amazingly for 1923. The...

- A great disc for silent film buffs and Lon Chaney fans
The picture quality on the disc is the best I've seen the film looking on any video or broadcast I've seen in the past (though it is an 80-plus year old silent film and this is never going to look like a Criterion Collection title). The...

- Where's the Love?
I adore Lon Chaney; I think he is one of the few true geniuses of the screen. The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of his most famous and celebrated films. This version even prologues with a note about the studio only turning out two...

- The Hunchback of Dilettantism
This is a terrible, terrible adaptation of Victor Hugos novel. The novel is one of the great landmarks of Humanist Litterature, while this is simply an uptight morality-play of the somewhat Victorian orientation. Claude Frollo, one of...
