Scan Color Depth

Color depth is the number of bits used to represent the color of a single pixel in a bitmapped image or video frame buffer. The greater the bit depth, the more colors that can be seen in the image. 8-bit color is 256 colors, and 16-bit color represents about 65, 000 colors. While 8 is probably low for the average consumer, 24 is probably plenty.

FlatbedA flatbed scanner has a flat glass plate over the scanning device onto which you place the image to be scanned. A cover is brought down on top of the image, and then the actual scanning elements move beneath the image, within the machine, to capture and record it. Film"Slide" (positive) or negative film can be scanned in equipment specially manufactured for this purpose.HandheldThere are two forms of Hand scanners: document and 3D scanners. Hand held document scanners are manual devices that are dragged across the surface of the image to be scanned.

    • I love this scanner...it is fast, generally bullet proof. There are a few weird things about it, like it doens't like to be plugged into UPS. It prefers to be plugged into a stip of the wall.
