Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
"One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year....Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting."?Entertainment Weekly Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers?some willingly, some unwittingly?have been involved in science's boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They've tested France's first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way. In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries?from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors' conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

Informative, Funny
I found this book recently in a used book store. She manages to be humorous and yet respectful of the dead at the same time. Really funny, easyreading and informative all in one, which is no easy feat. I never felt grossed out. For example, I have been to the Koerperwelten (Body Worlds)...

Stiff indeed, stiff as a bored.
Great subject and definitely made me think about death in a different light (which seems to to be the aim of the book so 5 stars). I give a lot of respect to the author for what she was willing to do and see as part of research. The way it was written was highly annoying and it was a slog to get...

Roach's best yet
Mary Roach has taught me so much--not just about science, but about writing as well. This book is well-researched, well-written, and funny, as Spook and Bonk are, and it's intellectually heftier than either. Roach approaches a potentially disturbing subject with sensitivity and humor, never...

Better Read Before Dead
Finally an author who delves into the subject of death matter of factly and really puts it out there for the reader. It wasn't gross, or macabre, or depressing. I found it very informative.Better to know your options while you have the chance to choose. Good read.

Three Screams
The book is very funny and the author does a good job in treating a delicate argument with respect. The writing style is easy and effective, even occasionally crunchy as in the case of the Three Screams recipe.Five stars.

Excellent
I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I picked up this book from my local library. But by the end of the first chapter I knew I was going to love it. This book goes into fascinating detail about the one thing that we as a society want to ignore so completely. I highly recommend it to anyone...

Thought Provoking Read!
This really is a thought provoking read! As Mary Roach relates experience after experience with the dead, I am left with a different feeling about the "life" of my body after I'm done with it. Her experiences are written in an interesting and often humorous manner. After reading only half the...

Fun book, if slightly morbid
A fun book - I learned a lot about a rather morbid subject, but the author has a light tone that made it a fast read. While I wouldn't recommend reading the description of decaying cadavers over breakfast as I did one morning, it's a book that is descriptive without being gratuitous in...
