Hybrid Theory

From: $13.97

It may be too cynical to assume Hybrid Theory changed its name to Linkin Park in order to appear right next to Limp Bizkit in your local record bin. But rock-rap workouts like "One Step Closer" and "Papercut" do make Linkin Park a comfortable fit with Fred Durst and his ilk. Producer Don Gilmore (Pearl Jam, Lit, Eve 6) and twin vocal threats Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda serve up industrial-strength rap and rock melodicism with equal aplomb on this woulda-been-self-titled debut effort. "Points of Authority" aims to sound like Trent Reznor wanking it up with Lars and company, whereas guitarist Brad Delson's Edge-y harmonics help "In the End" and "Pushing Me Away" evoke a dark romanticism akin to A Perfect Circle. Curiously, the band gets by with no bass player, while sample-happy DJ Joseph Hahn's step into the spotlight on the instrumental "Cure for the Itch" suggests a potential for eclecticism that could help Linkin Park outlive its seemingly transient genre. --Bill Forman

At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

Linkin Park is one of very few alternative rock groups i listen to, I'm mostly a Hip Hop and R&B person, but Linkin Park does a lil rapping which is why I listened to them in the first place, but ever since I have always loved Linkin...

From: Amazon Posted: Jul 31, 2008 Type: User Review Refreshing Blend of Rap and Metal

I am not among the many people that pretend to be cool and hate the popular bands. I just listen to whatever sounds good in my opinion. Linkin Park is a band that I love and can't get enough of. Hybrid Theory offers a great mix of rap and metal...

From: Amazon Posted: Jul 15, 2008 Type: User Review Undeniably catchy

So nearly eight years after its release, Hybrid Theory is still going strong. It is true that some of the lyrics may seem immature or generic, a good example being 'One Step Closer.' This album was directed towards teenagers so we'll ignore that...

From: Amazon Posted: Jul 03, 2008 Type: User Review a great CD with the dumbest first single!

"One Step Closer" was a bad choice for a 1st single, artistically speaking; it sounded (and still sounds, IMO) generic as heck, to put it simply. I didn't feel a great desire to own this CD until I heard "Crawling" for the first time on the...

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 14, 2008 Type: User Review The Codification of the Rap-Rock Genre

While the debut from Linkin Park did not offer anything significantly new, what it did provide was some brilliant, incendiary singles. From the lineage that came from Run-DMC and Aerosmith to Agit-rockers Rage Against The Machine, it was merely a...

From: Amazon Posted: Mar 20, 2008 Type: User Review There needs to be some growing up to do

Link Park. A cross between Hip-Hop and modern metal. Back in 2000 when I first purchased this album, I really enjoyed it, both the music and lyrics. To put it into retrospect, I enjoyed mostly anything that was on the radio. In later years, I...

This album is sooo good to me! I've heard every album that they've put out with the exception of the latest one, and I must say that I love each and every one of them!!! (Even the one that they did with Jay-Z.) But back to the point at hand. This...
