The Daily Five: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades
Do you love teaching but feel exhausted from the energy you expend cajoling, disciplining, and directing students on a daily basis? If so, you'll want to meet ?The Sisters?, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. Based on literacy learning and motivation research, they created a structure called The Daily Five which has been practiced and refined in their own classrooms for ten years, and shared with thousands of teachers throughout the United States. The Daily Five is a series of literacy tasks (reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work, and listening to reading) which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. This book not only explains the philosophy behind the structure, but shows you how to carefully and systematically train your students to participate in each of the five components. Explicit modeling practice, reflecting and refining take place during the launching phase, preparing the foundation for a year of meaningful content instruction tailored to meet the needs of each child. The Daily Five is more than a management system or a curriculum framework; it is a structure that will help students develop the habits that lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.

This book totally revamped my reading/LA instruction. No more worksheets! It is better instruction with less planning/prep.

Easy to Follow, Great Advice!
The sisters come up with some of the best teaching strategies I have heard of to this day. I have fully integrated this into my daily routine, and the students love it. More and more my students have become readers (in a school that isn't known for good reading scores), and I can truly see them...

The best thing to happen for teachers
I cannot speak highly enough about The Daily Five. I read the book before the start of the 08-09 school year because I knew I would be needing to make some changes in order to meet the needs of all my students without any parent help in the classroom. The sisters write with such voice that you...

I really enjoyed reading "The Daily Five". It is what I've been looking for to input in my 3rd grade classroom this year. I'm needing to create a classroom where the children have more independence and responsibility for their own learning while I am working with students in smaller groups....

amazing reading program
I used the daily 5 with my students this past year. I have taught 1st grade for 3 years and this was by far the best group of readers. I never thought it could happen, but they learned how to sit and read to themselves, with a partner, write and listen to reading for 20-30 minutes at a time....

Applicable to middle and high school
Though this is a primary-oriented text, I found it working wonders in middle and high school. This is the MOST POWERFUL structure of creating reading and writing independence I've every seen. I've adapted this to my high school classroom, making it the Daily 3: reading to yourself, reading to...

If you don't like "busy work" this is the book for you
I always hated giving out 'packets' or busy work to kids while I worked with small groups and this book has a nice way of dealing with that! I am a strong believer in if you want to be a good reader you have to read, read, read and if you want to be a good writer you have to write, write, write,...
