What the Dead Know: A Novel
Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who—or what—could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness?
Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been? Why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn't a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead end—a dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household.
In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, there is only one person who dares to be skeptical of a woman who wants to claim the identity of one Bethany sister without revealing the fate of the other. Will he be able to discover the truth?

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

Sisters Together
Laura Lippman's WHAT THE DEAD KNOWS is suspense that keeps you glued to the end excluding a sluggish beginning. The story is told from to perspective of each character who crosses the path of Sunny Bethany. But who is Sunny and what has been her...

Hard to see what the fuss is about
This book has been ballyhooed as something great, but it is just a pedestrian suspense story with a fairly predictable twist. The writing itself is serviceable but nothing inherently pleasing.

Lovely
I truly loved this book. I found it easy to follow, even through the flip flop of time, and when the twist at the end came, it felt like I should have known, but I did not see it coming. I thought it was a great suspense, and it just wet my...

superbly imagined
We've all been haunted for a day or a week by some terrible story without an ending. I remember being riveted by the still-unsolved disappearance of those two young girls from a Baltimore mall in the 70s myself. Like most, I only guessed...

Soild Cold Case Pageturner
What The Dead Know is the first novel I've read by Laura Lippman. The story begins with a hit and run accident. The woman involved is picked up and claims to be one of the Bethany sisters, two teenage girls who disappeared from a Baltimore mall...

Buried secrets, hidden lies
A hit and run on a Maryland highway, and a very cold murder case heats up. The police pick up the woman driver, who has a minor head injury, and the story she begins to tell is stunning. She knows so much about the disappearance of a pair of...

Much too slow
For one thing, what on earth is Amazon doing listing this under Romance? It wasn't Romantic Suspense - there wasn't a single character in this you'd WANT to see in a romantic situation. Aside from that, which wasn't the fault of the novel, I...

Horrible
I didn't realize until reading the other reviews that this book was based on a true story. That said, when reading the back cover, I thought it sounded interesting and was eager to try a new author. However, the writing is horrible. Journalist...

The dead should have never told me.
"...never again will they have any share in all the happens under the sun"...After reading this editing blunder in the opening Biblical quotation, I was uneasy about what was to come (even if it wasn't necessarily the author's fault).
