Booked to Die (Cliff Janeway Novels)
Denver homicide detective Cliff Janeway may not always play by the book, but he is an avid collector of rare and first editions. After a local bookscout is killed on his turf, Janeway would like nothing better than to rearrange the suspect's spine. But the suspect, local lowlife Jackie Newton, is a master at eluding the law, and Janeway's wrathful brand of off-duty justice costs him his badge. Turning to his lifelong passion, Janeway opens a small bookshop -- all the while searching for evidence to put Newton away. But when prized volumes in a highly sought-after collection begin to appear, so do dead bodies. Now, Janeway's life is about to start a precarious new chapter as he attempts to find out who's dealing death along with vintage Chandlers and Twains. Includes information on John Dunning's new Cliff Janeway novel, The Bookman's Promise, coming soon in hardcover from Scribner

My favorite of the Cliff Janeway series so far.
I originally discovered the Cliff Janeway series by John Dunning when a coworker gave me one for my birthday. I enjoyed that one (The Bookman's Promise, I think), and moved on to The Bookwoman's Last Fling, which I did not enjoy nearly as much. Booked to Die, then, brings me back to the type of...

Great summer read
I have always enjoyed mysteries but struggle with some of the newer authors. I'm looking for a mental puzzle, and if possible to learn something new about a geogrpahic area or a particular sport or interest. I'm not looking for bloody details, and definitely am not interested in a serial killer....

Be Patient with Him
It's a good thing I didn't read the Janeway series in sequence because if I'd started with this I'd never have read another. And that would be a shame, because his writing gets better as the years go by.At this stage, Janeway is a pompous, opinionated blowhard, an antique "tough guy" who would...

Excellence for book-lovers
An EXCELLENT mystery/suspense series for book-lovers & collectors. However, be forewarned: If you are not a book-lover, then the pages of book-related details (what defines a "first edition," what makes one old book valuable and another, less so) might be hard to wade through. (Maybe not:...

A Book Loving Private Eye
This is another wonderful book in the Cliff Janeway series. Cliff is a private eye who is both a sleuth and book lover. He is a tough guy literati who knows how to pack a gun and spot a valuable first edition at the same time. This plot, like Dunning's other Janeway book, centers around a murder...

ok book....
It was a little slow in the beginning, but then it started to pick up some in the middle. I wouldn't call this book a page turner by any means but there were a few parts that kept my interest for awhile. overall it was an okay detective and murder mystery story.

Dunning is enthralling
Mr. Dunning has created a very intriguing character in Cliff Janeway and his adventures are so real that you feel that you are inside his head. This was a wonderful mystery, one of his best.

"Check Out" this Novel Mystery!
Sorry for the pun. It just couldn't be helped!! That's what you get when you have a mystery that deals with books!!Denver police officer, Cliff Janeway, is a bit of an enigma. He's a good, hard-working cop that used to be a boxer. AND he's a collector of rare books. Strange combination, that's...

A Real Pleasure to Read
I've read close to a thousand thrillers and mysteries, and BOOKED TO DIE is one of the best ones I've read recently. John Dunning is a remarkably good writer, and the prose in this novel is first rate. The mystery story is well constructed, and the ending comes as a pure surprise.Of course, the...
