Not Donna At Her Best

"Acqua Alta" is Donna Leon's fifth novel, and in this one she is not plotting at the top of her form. The book has more melodrama than drama; the art fraud schemes seem far-fetched; and the machinations of the bad guys are not credible. There are two murders, one in a Venice museum and one in...

Definitely Not one of Leon's Best

I had discovered Donna Leon only recently and most of the books Ihave read I have really enjoyed. However this one I simply could notget into. It seemed long, drawn out and boring to me. The violentattack on Brett twice was just too much and too graphic. I think oneof the problems in our...

Another impressive read by Donna Leon

This author does not cease to amaze me. Her books are extremely enjoyable and they are even getting better and better. Usually, in each installment we get to see a particular feature of Venice highlighted, and this case is no exception. However, instead of using a charming feature, Leon goes for...

High Water in Venice

I enjoy this series quite a lot. Reading Leon's books is a great way to spend time in Venice. You get a great feeling of what it must be like to live in this beautiful city, even in winter when the water rises in the streets and into buildings. Three quarters of this book was tremendous....

The "High Water" Mark in the Series, so far

Sorry about the bad pun, but "Acqua Alta" (High Water) is the best mystery that Leon has written to that time (1996). The book brings back two characters from the first novel, but in a totally different way. The two woman protagonists are both cultured successful woman in their own right,...

A Case That Can Be Solved Amid Flood Waters in Winter

Among the first four books in the Guido Brunetti series, I was annoyed by the tendency to create mysteries whose solution led to powerful patrons who were able to cover up for themselves so that there was essentially no justice done. I was very pleased to see that Ms. Leon downplayed that theme...

A Staunchly Slogging Guido

This is only the second Commissario Brunetti book I've read, and Acqua Alta is vastly superior to the other (Through a Glass, Darkly). I should admit that I didn't read either for their "mysteries," but rather to enjoy their depictions of the various unique levels of Venecian culture that Guido...
