A Season for the Dead

In a hushed Vatican Reading Room, the scene is shocking: a crazed professor shot dead after brandishing evidence of a grisly crime. Moments later, two bodies are found in a nearby church, each with a gruesome calling card from their killer.

Detective Nic Costa is one of the first on the scene. A cop who barely looks his twenty-seven years, Nic soon meets a woman who will dominate both his thoughts?and his investigation. A cool, beautiful professor of early Christianity, Sara Farnese was in the Vatican Library on that fateful day, a witness to her colleague?s outburst and grotesque death.

And as more bodies are found, her role becomes even more baffling?because each victim had intimately known Sara, a woman whose history becomes more lurid and unfathomable with each revelation. Until the case takes a sudden, strange turn?and the secrets of a woman, a killer, and a city begin to unravel?with devastating consequences?.

Solid start to Rome based mystery series.

David Hewson's first mystery novel featuring Rome, Italy, Detective Nic Costa is full of intrigue, political conspiracies, religious blasphemies and of course a handful of juicy murders.Costa is 27 years old and still trying to make a name for himself with the Rome police force, particularly with...

long-winded, really

I guess I was rushing that day and in my haste, I thought *Season of the Dead* would be somewhat similar to Dan Brown's *The Da Vinci Code*. Boy, was I wrong!Nonetheless, I thought this book was long-winded in trying to figure out what is going on and how it ties to the Vatican. Professor Sara...

Complex, intelligent, and suspenseful

The cover of my copy of A Season for the Dead declares that it is `better than the Da Vinci Code'. I don't disagree, although I have to say, it doesn't have all that much in common with the Dan Brown thriller. The story: In Rome, a serial killer is murdering people in such a way as to mimic the...

First in the Nic Costa Series

David Hewson is a weekly columnist for the Sunday times. As well as several novels he has also found the time to write a number of travel books. He lives in Kent.David Hewson's books can, to a number of people appear to be extremely violent, some would say gratuitously so, but his books are after...

Blame it on the weather

Maybe it was because of the weather. It was difficult to get into the stifling heat of August in Rome when you are in chilly Scotland in December. This is the first story in a series concerning Nic Costa, the youthful police detective. There is a grisly series of murders, an attractive...

Lackluster Roman mystery novel

I agree with the reviewer who said, "Good, but not a home run." I had high hopes and it started off relatively well with what I thought would be characters I'd care about and interesting art & Roman detail. It was a bit vague on the little bomb innuendo at the end. Lead characters were also vague...

Spoken Like a True Roman...Thriller

Put me down as a devoted admirer of David Hewson. My first book was Lucifer's Shadow with fast-past intrigue running through a gamet of historical backgrounds. Superbly written. This year, I picked up his first Nic Costa novel which captivated my senses and transported me to the sights, aromas...

Not too shabby

Hewson doesn't hit a home run with this novel, but he at least gets to first base. Although this book has some stilted language it was pretty interesting. I can think of at least 400-500 other books I would recommend before this one, but if you are the type of reader who has read virtually...

Pretty good 3.5 star book for a series starter.

No spoilersI have never read any Hewson books before A Season for the Dead, and since I was looking for a new series to get involved in, I decided to give him a try. Because I am a fan of historical fiction, I knew I'd enjoy the setting of the book (Vatican City and Rome: endless history there),...

Intelligent, thoughtful, original

I actually read the trilogy in reverse order and now wish I had started with this one and the introduction to Nic Costa. David Hewson has turned out some of the best fiction and some of the worst. These three tales of the Rome police are fantastic. Each and every story is riveting and complex...
