Beowulf: A New Verse Translation
Composed toward the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the classic Northern epic of a hero's triumphs as a young warrior and his fated death as a defender of his people. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on, physically and psychically exposed in the exhausted aftermath. It is not hard to draw parallels in this story to the historical curve of consciousness in the twentieth century, but the poem also transcends such considerations, telling us psychological and spiritual truths that are permanent and liberating. In his new translation, Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney has produced a work that is both true, line by line, to the original poem and a fundamental expression of his own creative gift. A New York Times bestseller, winner of the Whitbread Award. more

- Heaney's translation of Beowulf--Old English not included
The translation is beautiful, and the poem epic. The one thing holding me back from giving it five stars is that the Kindle version does not include the Old English like the print version of the book does.

- Hidden political propaganda by Heaney?
So Heaney won the Noble prize? Then I guess this translation of Beowulf must be politically correct (PC). Because the Swedish Nobel prize committee only nominate authors who have a politically correct moral message in their writings.This...

- Great Book!
I have a copy for myself and I have purchased three copies in the last year for friends. Very easy to read. Translation is fast-paced, maintains original episodic velocity.

- not exactily unabridged
If you are following along in the book, by Seamus Heaney, sometimes entire pages are cut out. Its not just the unimportant stuff either. It is still a good CD and translation but its not exactly what it says it is.
