Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes

Here's a lively, hilarious, not-so-reverent crash course through the great philosophical traditions, schools, concepts, and thinkers. It's Philosophy 101 for everyone who knows not to take all this heavy stuff too seriously. Some of the Big Ideas are Existentialism (what do Hegel and Bette Midler have in common?), Philosophy of Language (how to express what it's like being stranded on a desert island with Halle Berry), Feminist Philosophy (why, in the end, a man is always a man), and much more. Finally—it all makes sense!
“I laughed, I learned, I loved it!” Roy Blount Jr.

At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 28, 2008 Type: User Review Long on lightness.

No doubt about it, this is a fun little book to read. That said, if you hoped for a painless way to get an even superficial understanding of the basics of philosophy, you'll probably have to keep looking.

Unfortunately, that was my...

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 27, 2008 Type: User Review new insights of recycled jokes

You can tell a good comedian by his delivery. Cathcart and Klein have writen an interesting, and even fascinating, book of jokes. Some of the jokes are old and not particularly funny, but I found that I spent a lot of time thinking about them and...

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 18, 2008 Type: User Review Your spouse will wonder why you're laughing in the john.

This is a truly delightful book. It manages to combine humor and profound philosophical issues in a manner that doesn't trivialize the philosophy or dilute the jokes. This is a very creative effort and one can only hope for more from these authors.

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 18, 2008 Type: User Review Cute Introduction but lacks anything really interesting

The book does a fair job of introducing several basic philosophic concepts though the authors occasionally miss the point or in the case of the brief discussion of the Will to Power get it completely wrong. None the less, a cute book, but watch...

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 15, 2008 Type: User Review A great book. Laugh out loud funny and yet you learn...wow!

This is one of those books that I will never part with. It will be a book that I will pick up, read about a particular philosophy (along with jokes/stories that further explain that philosophy) and it will help me understand that philosophical...

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 14, 2008 Type: User Review Even better than I thought it would be.

This book is better than I thought it would be. It keeps things simple and gives funny stories as examples. It's also small in size, so it is easy to take with you. As I read this, I continue to think this would be a great alternative to the...

Sorry, but I couldn't resist. Imagine your old "Phil 101: Intro to Phil" prof had the manner of a Borscht Belt comic and you will get an idea of what this book is like. While some of the gags fizzle; they keep coming at such a rate that you are...
