Guru: My Days with Del Close

Jeff Griggs paints a hilarious and ultimately moving portrait of one of improv's most important figures. Chronicling the last years of Del Close's life, when he was assigned to drive Del around for his weekly errands, Griggs relates episodes that will leave you laughing out loud and at the same time capture Del's genius at improv. Close was impossibly irreverent, intelligently witty, and incredibly dedicated to his craft. Griggs brings to life this complex, unpredictable character and adds the essentials of Close's biography.  more

This was a great book. The author uses a lot of real life experiences to bring Del to life, which needed to be documented for future generations.

A must read if you love Chicago Improv

Even if you aren't in the Chicago Improv scene, this is a very funny and cleverly written book about the one and only Del Close. Del was a drug addict, an actor, and a believer in the art of long-form improv. I would imagine knowing...

Guru: Compelling, poignant and hilarious.

This book was a real blessing for me. I was a student of Del's for four months during the last year of his life. He was a complex man, by his own admission, not a very likable one. This book allowed great insight into what was going on...

I can't

sympathize with the storyteller or the subject. They both seemed too cold. ...this well has lukewarmness. I wanted to walk away from this bio having found out cool little anticdotes and I'll I got was the story of two men who couldn't...
