Groucho is unwilling to reveal his later life honestly
If you can ignore the tired witticisms, the writing isn't bad. Although he tells much about his early life struggle with poverty and vaudeville, Groucho is unwilling to reveal his later life honestly and so the last third of the book descends into funny stories and a comic routine, which really...

Groucho at his witty best!
As I am a 1930's re-enactor, I have been trying to study the movie stars of the time period. Who better than the fabulous Marx Brothers! You can actually see Groucho wiggling his eyebrows as you read his words. I never knew he was an author and philosopher, as well as great comedian....

Funny
I thought Groucho did a good job of telling about growing up and there are some great stories about knocking around on the vaudville circuit. It was a quick and easy read, but most enjoyable. Harpo Speaks by Harpo Marx goes more into depth and also some of the same stories are told from a...

A touching biography of a celebrated comic
This biography of Groucho is as touching as is through. The reader is wisked away into the comic world of one of America's greatest performers. The book is filled with humorous stories from Groucho's life. The author has woven in some of Groucho's most personal views and we hear his outspoken...

Very funny fast read
Even though, as others have mentioned, this isn't really a true autobiography per se, it's a very involving, fast, funny read. There are a lot of personal reflections, anecdotes, and the wonderful chapters about the Marx family when their boys were young and then their early vaudeville days, but...

Is being funny enough?
As a number of other Amazon reviewers have pointed out this is not a real autobiography. Groucho is not interested in telling the reader about his inner life and self, or about the character of his relations with others. What he does do is be Groucho, and tell in his own inimitable tone a lot of...

Groucho's own voice
This "autobiography" is largely anecdotal and is far from a scholarly study of the Marx bros. and their contribution to American cultural history. That said it is a rare opportunity to "hear" Groucho tell some hysterically funny stories and voice his opinions on a variety of subjects in the...
