The Montessori Method

This groundbreaking classic of educational philosophy takes on urgent new necessity today, as "traditional" methods of early-childhood schooling seem to be failing us. Published in Italian in 1909 and first translated into English in 1912, these still-revolutionary theories focus on the individuality of the child and on nurturing her inherent joy of learning to create schools and other learning environments that are oriented on the child. Eschewing rote memorization and drilling, Montessori's method helps to foster abstract thinking and to fulfill a child's highest potential, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Parents from all walks of life will find the ideas herein immensely valuable. Italian doctor and educator MARIA MONTESSORI (1870-1952) was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School. She traveled extensively in Europe, America, and the Near East, studying early education and testing her educational methods.  more

must

It seems so difficult to realize that Dr Montessori has formulated her educational model 100 years ago, developed all the didactic material herself ( without the aid of computers and technology), practiced her methods, revised her teaching and made all us educators a present of her writings; and...

Wonderful approach! please read before taking sociopath claims of a previous reviewer seriously

The book is dry, I do admit...but it is sound. I really wanted to reply to the review claims made by a Doctor (of what I am not terribly sure) that this will turn your children into sociopaths. As per my post in the comments reply section, I attended a Montessori myself as a child. I would share...

Centennial Edition

Responding to the previous reviewer: be sure to get the "Centennial Edition" with the Renoir painting of a mother/child on the cover. That version includes all the original illustrations, in a new design (it's not a photocopy of the original, unlike the cheap versions).

Don't buy this paperback version!

This paperback version published by www.bnpublishing.com (ISBN 9562915824) excludes most of the original illustrations/pictures/photos without indication in the product description, which, I think, has largely lowered the quality and damaged contents of this book. So, this book is not what it was...

The education of a sociopath

This is not a work of scientific pedagogy, it is a Rousseauesque definition of freedom (in the manner of EMILE:a book damned by Mary Wollstonecraft's A VINDICATION OF THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN) and a Kantian synthetic a priori claim to the existence of something which exists because Kant said it did....

Very Informative

This book is very interesting in the history and authentic teaching methods of Maria Montessori. However, I would not classify it as an entertaining book as it goes into great detail about theories and methodologies.

A useful classic, but very dated

While there is much to commend this book, especially for parents of children in Montessori programs (which is why I read it), there is also much about it that is a problem. First, there is a gushiness in Montessori's utopian descriptions of how her program will create a "new man"--it's almost...

a classic work on child pedagogy

Here, Maria Montessori introduces a scientific approach to pedagogy. The Montessori schools which she established and developed are intended for children three to seven years of age. The children are allowed as much freedom as possible and are provided with "didactic materials" which are various...
