Watercolor with no color

Complete Guide to Watercolor PaintingMost illustrations are in black and white, more than 50% indeed. That's not what a watercolor book should be.

Watercolor Painting

This book is one of the best "How To" books in the thinking process for painting. I wouldn't necessarily suggest this book to a beginner but for a seasoned artist or someone who has been painting for a while it is truly a well written book.

colorless illustrations

How can a book that claims to be a "complete guide" to watercolor painting be produced without color It boggles the mind. All the illustrations are in black and white, reproduced as if by a xerox machine, with muddled detail to boot. Unbelievable!

Ed Whitney

This book was recommended by Tony Couch in his book, "Keys to Successful Painting". I find the material in Whitney's book to be the basis for Tony's book. They are both devoted to the principles of design, and the elements of design. Whitney's book has a more in depth approach and gives...

mother lode for composition and design

This reissue of a classic is essential to the landscape artist concerned about composition and design. The text and principles are clearly outlined but for visual people it lacks examples in most instances. The black and white copies of paintings are difficult to analyze. It needs updating with...

black and white!

I was disappointed that 90% of the examples by Whitney were in BLACK and WHITE. It would have been far more helpful had the pictures been in color.

A Must read for the serious painter

If you are a serious painter, you need to know two basic things....how to put paint on paper and where to put paint on paper. A lot of books will teach you the former. No book will teach the latter better than Edgar Whitney's. And if you don't master design (where to put the paint) it doesn't...
