Thule Sidekick Roof Cargo Box 682 - Car, Truck or SUV
Perfectly suited to carrying everything from camping gear to golf clubs, the Thune 682 Sidekick rooftop cargo box makes a great cross-country companion. The Sidekick, which mounts directly to most removable and factory-installed roof racks, offers a convenient side-opening design that facilitates easy loading and unloading. It's also plenty spacious, with a total capacity of 8 cubic feet--enough for up to two sets of golf clubs or a bunch of camping gear. And thanks to the impact-resistant polyethylene construction, the Sidekick is built to last. A good-looking and functional addition to any vehicle, the Sidekick measures 54 by 15.5 by 25 inches (W x H x D) and assembles easily. Users should note that this cargo box is not One-Key System compatible. What's in the Box? Rooftop cargo box, master parts bag, small parts bag, mounting hardware, user's manual About Thule To say that Thule?s beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance. By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market. The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users. more

Great at what it is
We purchased the 682 on short notice because it served a need, and the price was right. Product was order and expedient shipping was requested. The cargo box arrived on the expected/promised day and was reasonably easy for me to assemble, though I could probably be considered an expert. Most...

Fantastic . . . except for one small thing
I'd read other reviews so was ready for some challenges assembling the cargo box, but with minimal help steadying it, it went together just fine. At 16 lbs. it's light enough for me to put on my Outback by myself - and I'm a 5'4" woman who's pushing 70, although in good shape. I had a question...

Great system
Ditto other customers who had positive feedback. We just got back from taking this box and the four bags (sold seperate) to the Grand Canyon from Central Texas. It worked great. Four full bags were a little tight, but the weight is only supposed to around 100 pounds. Assembly was quick when you...

FAR, FAR TOO COSTLY FOR THE QUALITY
This cargo box is attractive and very lightweight, but quality, and probably durability, is cut dramatically in order to achieve that end. My biggest concern with this is the way the arms that hold the top up are attached. The ball joint is inserted into a simple plastic joint, which is far too...

Thule Sidekick fits my Matrix perfectly
I recently downsized to a 2009 Toyota Matrix to learn thay my old cartop carrier could not be installed without a huge hassle. The Thule Sidekick installed in about five minutes, fits the Matrix perfectly, and provides the extra storage capacity needed for longer trips, camping, etc.

The sidekick held up great at freeway speeds and gave us the extra storage space we needed. Amazon has the best price on this unit.

Thule Sidekick
Compared to an older Thule roof box that I own, the Sidekick has very light (even flimsy) construction. Price was good. The two lock system is a good idea but the material is so thin it appears someone could literally use a pair of heavy duty sissors to cut around the locks. Having said that it...

Water tight easy way to carry extra items
Bought this for a trip back east from California. It survived the torrential rain preceding the tornados and flooding of Iowa, Kansas and Illinois with maybe 3 drops of water inside. Travelled so well could not even feel it on the roof. Very economical way to carry those extra items....

surprising space and not a real drag on fuel mileage.
Just returned from a trip to florida and have to say I am impressed with the sidekick. It is definitely on the small side, but that is ok. It frees up space inside the car, but keeps drag low. It dropped mpg on our subuaru outback by only about 1.5 mpg. We drove through 3 different storms with...
