The Art of War (Pocket Edition) (Shambhala Pocket Classics)
"Thomas Cleary's translation of Sun Tzu's 2,000 years old The Art of War makes immediately relevant one of the greatest Chinese classical texts. Th ere's not a dated maxim or vague prescription in it. 'To win without fighting is best,' Sun Tzu said. For him war was coeval. Absorb this book, and you can throw out all those contemporary books about managerial leadership."--Newsweek. more

The gold standard
I've read at least one other translation of this work and the Samuel B. Griffith translation is much preferred. By comparison his language is elegant, almost bordering on poetry compared to the dry prose of another writer's newer translation. Yet, the content is clear, never being compromised in...

Over-rated
This is a very popular book and comes highly recommended from many places. Sadly, I was unimpressed. Perhaps this particular translation is bad. I haven't read others do I can't comment on that aspect. However, this particular copy was not worth the read.

Who is this for, exactly?
So many people have recommended this book, and talk up its application to other areas of life outside of war (e.g. business). I figured it was time to see what the hype was about, so I gave the Librivox audio version a try.I'm having a very hard time understanding who this book might be relevant...

outstanding
I can not speak intelligently about the quality of this translation. Given the accuracy of translation / I found that this was a brilliant summary of tactics used in ground warfare in China several thousand years ago. Still poignant today across battlefields. It does not of course include...

The art of war
This book will provide you the knowledge to declare war on Amazon - against a corporation who has chosen to silently and stupidly to censore the offerings online. They will not sell books that they deem as perceived 'gay' works. Welcome to Am-carthy-son.

Introductory material is not so introductory
At the outset, let me say that Sun Tzu gets 5 stars. Having withstood at least two millennia, his thirteen chapters of warlike proverbs are beyond any modern reproach. I'm giving two stars to this book's introductory material. If I was familiar with Chinese history, then perhaps I would have...

The Best Traslation I got in many years!!
The permanent and global chinese military theory from a classical author. Its style and content characteristics support the idea of one unique author. It is of very easy reading and very long full comprehension. It is like to be defoliating an artichoke or an onion. With each useful reading, more...

For Statesmen and Military Commanders
This edition of Sun Tzu's Art of War is noteworthy for several reasons. The book was translated and edited by U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Samuel B. Griffith, who served in China and fought the Japanese in the Pacific during World War II. General Griffith provides useful annotations, while...

Overhyped book
This book is overhyped. The "knowledge" tidbits are sometimes conflicting with each other. The book does have some common sense knowledge but there are lots of other ways to learn that information in straightforward then to go through the hard read. At the same time, the book is very thin. One...
