The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World
"33,000 pages 44 million words 10 billion years of history 1 obsessed man Part memoir and part education (or lack thereof), The Know-It-All chronicles NPR contributor A.J. Jacobs's hilarious, enlightening, and seemingly impossible quest to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica from A to Z. To fill the ever-widening gaps in his Ivy League education, A.J. Jacobs sets for himself the daunting task of reading all thirty-two volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His wife, Julie, tells him it's a waste of time, his friends believe he is losing his mind, and his father, a brilliant attorney who had once attempted the same feat and quit somewhere around Borneo, is encouraging but, shall we say, unconvinced. With self-deprecating wit and a disarming frankness, The Know-It-All recounts the unexpected and comically disruptive effects Operation Encyclopedia has on every part of Jacobs's life -- from his newly minted marriage to his complicated relationship with his father and the rest of his charmingly eccentric New York family to his day job as an editor at Esquire. Jacobs's project tests the outer limits of his stamina and forces him to explore the real meaning of intelligence as he endeavors to join Mensa, win a spot on Jeopardy!, and absorb 33,000 pages of learning. On his journey he stumbles upon some of the strangest, funniest, and most profound facts about every topic under the sun, all while battling fatigue, ridicule, and the paralyzing fear that attends his first real-life responsibility -- the impending birth of his first child. The Know-It-All is an ingenious, mightily entertaining memoir of one man's intellect, neuroses, and obsessions and a soul-searching, ultimately touching struggle between the all-consuming quest for factual knowledge and the undeniable gift of hard-won wisdom. At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.
This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

N is for Neurotic
After deciding that he had forgotten most of what he learned in college and that his mental faculties were atrophying due to his immersion in pop culture as a result of being an Esquire editor, A.J. Jacobs commits to reading the Encyclopedia...

A Must-Read!
This book had me rolling on the floor laughing, which is quite a feat for a book about reading the encyclopedia. A.J. Jacobs's tone and insights into his life, from his desire to be a father to his own complicated relationship with his father,...

What a fun read!
This is one of the funniest, most enjoyable books I've read in some time. He dedicates each chapter to a separate letter of the alphabet, listing many fascinating facts about all facets of life he's learned along with various experiences in his...

Easy and fun to read
The author has an easy, self-depreciating writing style that makes for a most enjoyable read. Reading the Brittanica is neither easy nor light but Jacobs did enjoy the whole experience, all the same, as is evident from his writings.

Fun and easy and informative
A fun book about a guy who takes on the task of reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. Someone with a better memory would take a lot of random EB information out of this book but I don't do so well at remembering. It's funny and light and fun...

funny
I like AJ's books. They make me laugh. I have read 2 of his books and both of them were very good. My only quibble is the vast amount of information was too much for my brain. I would try and tell my husband one of the interesting facts and...

One of the best and funniest books. It's witty, clever and full of subtle and sometimes not so subtle humor. Reading it was truly a delight, and it's hard to say reading books can be delightful experience lately. It's perfect for a light-hearted...

Sometimes my teenage daughter gives me a book that I 'absolutely must read'. Usually I oblige, and mostly I do not regret it.

I see myself in this loser
AJ Jacobs spends most of this book ensuring I would never want to hang out with him. But I finished it, so he wins.
