Should have been called "The Music Woman and the Other Guy"
I guess it's a case of life imitating art imitating life. This movie is about a con man who makes money by conning small towns into thinking he's a "music man" who can save their wayward youth by organizing them into marching bands, and then when he's got their money and it's too late, he boards a...

Fresh approach to an old standard.
When I first watched Matthew Broderick's interpretation of the character of Harold Hill, I didn't like it but, realizing that I was locked into Robert Preston's portrayal, I thought I should give Broderick's approach a little more time before making a final judgement. Well, I did and Broderick's...

Surprisingly Good!
I got this "rendition" for my sister who took me to see Robert Preston starring in it in the early 60's. I was 13 and loved musicals and this is one of the best. Matthew does an excellent job. I was doubtful he could pull it off. But just like "The Producers" which pit his ability against...

Deseves to be in the 50 cent Bin
Adore "The Music Man" and love Broderick (ever since "WarGames" in 1983) but he was the wrong choice for this show - despite whatever his chronological age was when he made this version, he looked way too young for the role - made me feel like I was watching a High School production of the...

Hollywood Fails Again.
Hollywood continues to try to re-make already perfect film musicals better. And more often than not they fail. With the Music Man comes another failure. Nothing good to say about this one. Bad bad casting = Matthew Broderick. I've seen actors playing Harold Hill in High School Productions shine...

Seventy Six Trombones Led The Big Parade.......
"The Music Man" is the story of professional con artist Professor Harold Hill, who sets out to con the citizens of River City, Iowa into forming a boys band. During his scheme he meets up with his old buddy Marcellis, who informs him of the new pool table Mayor Shinn has recently installed in the...

Unexpectedly Pleasing TV Production
I am a big fan of the Preston/Jones version of Meredith Wilson's "The Music Man" and purchased this DVD only because I think Kristin Chenoweth has one of the best singing voices currently performing. Matthew Broderick, while no Robert Preston, was not nearly so bad as I expected. Kristin...

Much less than the sum of the parts
What a disappointment! I needed to buy the movie and debated between the original, which I had seen before, and this, which I had not. Boy, did I make the wrong choice. I'm not a real fan of Shirley Jones, and absolutely adore Kristen Chenowith, so bought this version for that reason alone....
