Set List

From: $9.97

Hugely popular in their homeland of Ireland, the Frames top the charts and play to 30,000 people in Dublin. The aptly-titled live album is their fifth and the one they're hoping will connect in America. The quintet's sound draws upon such acts as the Clash (with whom they share a love of the anthemic) and the Pixies (with whom they share a quest for more oblique explorations), as well as on native traditions (albeit updated with a big wallop and galloping propulsion). Recorded before an enthusiastic audience, the band is clearly spurred on by the adoration, as well as a sense of community. The songs often feel like they're giving voice to their countrymen, celebrating a shared sense of justice, outrage, home, faith, and hope. One of the secrets to the band's dazzling and incendiary sound is the mix of full throttle guitar and soaring violin. Lead singer Glen Hansard builds heartfelt ruminations into his between song patter, and leads the band down many surprise avenues, with bits of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" appearing out of their own numbers. --David Greenberger

At Smarter.com, we aim to ensure we give you the most sound buying advice possible. With our 'Cumulative Product Rating' system, in order for a product to receive a rating score, it must have a minimum number of ratings to qualify.

This system is not intended to diminish the value of products with a low number of ratings and reviews, they're great, and hopefully very helpful, but if you want our advice, we want to make sure that the product you're thinking of buying has been rated and reviewed by enough shoppers like you to be a valuable indicator of product quality.

From: Amazon Posted: Aug 19, 2008 Type: User Review Just buy it

I was given this CD on Sunday and listened to it today (Tuesday) for the first time. I would say that it is the most striking experience I have had listening to a CD for the first time since, well, perhaps the first time I heard London Calling....

From: Amazon Posted: Apr 11, 2008 Type: User Review I am a big The Frames Fan Now!

I got introduced to The Frames after seeing the movie "Once." I absolutely loved the movie and the soundtrack. The actual band in the movie was The Swell Season which was formerly The Frames where they replaced one member with Marketa Irglova...

From: Amazon Posted: Feb 08, 2008 Type: User Review A band best "live"

This is my third cd of the Frames which I have bought, and it is quite obvious that this is a band who should be seen live. This recording captures an ecstatic audience and a band that is just feeding off them to give an outstanding performance....

From: Amazon Posted: Sep 28, 2007 Type: User Review Spirited Irish rock without all the proselytising

In all honesty, this is the only way in which one can be introduced appropriately to The Frames. Their live performances add an extra dimension to music that, in the studio versions, at times fails to represent the true spirit and character of the...

From: Amazon Posted: May 08, 2006 Type: User Review Very little risk....

This is the first review I've ever been compelled to write. An Irish friend suggested The Frames to me based on my taste in music. I bought "Set List" on a whim, having only heard the song Fitzcarraldo. Sometimes live albums are best appreciated...

From: Amazon Posted: Jan 28, 2006 Type: User Review The best music

I saw The Frames at Irving Plaza in NYC in the Fall of 2005 and still get chills thinking about it. It was the best show I've been to in a long time. Anything by The Frames is worth a listen especially a live album. This cd is great!

From: Amazon Posted: Oct 23, 2005 Type: User Review One of the best bands out there

Having spent almost a year in Ireland, I had heard of the Frames a bit, and a friend of mine made me a copy of Set List. I immediately fell in love with them. I also had the pleasure of seeing them at Oxegen, and in Boston. So I have seen them...

From: Amazon Posted: Nov 23, 2004 Type: User Review What a pity!!!

It blows my mind everyday that this band hasn't blown up the American charts yet. I blame it on their promoters. I lived in Ireland in 2002, and the best experience I took from that country other than my wife, is THE FRAMES. This band is the...

From: Amazon Posted: Sep 30, 2004 Type: User Review amazing

I just got back from a trip to Ireland and had picked this up in a record store. I'd heard of the band (big fan of "The Commitments" and any good bio of the cast lists Glen Hansard's formation of the Frames). I had no clue how good this cd was...

From: Amazon Posted: Aug 14, 2004 Type: User Review The Best Band you've Never Heard of: The Frames

I first heard the Frames earlier this year when they were on tour with Damien Rice. I got to the venue early, and it changed my life. The Frames are terrific live--so good, in fact, that after a few songs, I didn't care if Damien Rice ever came...
