Buddha
With such bestsellers as A History of God and Islam, Karen Armstrong has consistently delivered "penetrating, readable, and prescient" (The New York Times) works that have lucidly engaged a wide range of religions and religious issues. In Buddha she turns to a figure whose thought is still reverberating throughout the world 2,500 years after his death. Many know the Buddha only from seeing countless serene, iconic images. But what of the man himself and the world he lived in? What did he actually do in his roughly eighty years on earth that spawned one of the greatest religions in world history? Armstrong tackles these questions and more by examining the life and times of the Buddha in this engrossing philosophical biography. Against the tumultuous cultural background of his world, she blends history, philosophy, mythology, and biography to create a compelling and illuminating portrait of a man whose awakening continues to inspire millions.

- This is a true biography
There is so little actually "known" about the Buddha's life. It so good to read Karen Armstrong who keeps the biography on the earth as her "witness." This is a needed and worthwhile biography. Thank you Dr. Armstrong.

- Excellant introduction to the Buddha.
Well written, novelized biography. Ms. Armstrong does a good job of avoiding much of the early legend that turns many modern readers off. She has researched the Suttas well (chronology of the events of Gotama's early life are not...

- A Moderate Biography for the Discoverer of The Middle Way
Karen Armstrong presents a short biography of Siddhatta Gotama or the Buddha, attempting to place him within his historical, philosophical and psychological context. While this work would not be out of place on any scholar's shelves, it...

This is a short, compact read on the life of the Buddha by a scholar of excellent reputation. Armstrong has lived up to that reputation here by delivering another quality work of scholarship that is more accessible to the reader than...

- Interpreting the unfamiliar path
It's difficult to fit this subject into the usual "Penguin Lives" format. As Armstrong acknowledges, we really know hardly anything about his dates of birth and death, many of the places mentioned in the early Pali texts (she uses this...

- Misses the mark.....
This attempt at capturing the life of the Buddha missed the mark in my opinion. While it is well researched and is most likely a sincere attempt of capturing the life of one of the most influential religious figures of all times, I...
