Contrast Ratio
Contrast Ratio

The difference between the whitest white and the darkest black colors the display can show. The greater the contrast between these colors, the better the screen and the subtlety of colors it can display.

Aspect Ratio
Aspect Ratio

The ratio between the horizontal dimension and the vertical dimension. Common monitor aspect ratios are 4:3 and 5:4. Monitors with a 4:3 aspect ratio need a screen resolution setting with a 4:3 aspect ratio. If the monitor and screen resulution do not have the same ratio, the display will be squished and objects will appear fatter. If your monitor has a 5:4 aspect ratio, then use a resolution setting which also has a 5:4 aspect ratio. Here are the more common resolutions having a 4:3 aspect ratio: 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864, and 1600x1200 pixels. Resolution settings with a 5:4 aspect ratio are 1280x1024 pixels, and 1600x1280 pixels. The display will be distorted if you use any of these resulotion settings on a monitor having a 4:3 aspect ratio.LCD monitors typically have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (or sometimes 16:10 or 15:9). Widescreen LCD displays are great for viewing DVD movies in widescreen format, displaying multiple windows side by side, or playing games.

The size of the screen indicates the picture surface area. Screen size is measured from corner to corner diagonally.

Response Time
Response Time

The average amount of time it takes for a liquid crystal cell to go from one shade of grey to another. Lower numbers mean faster transitions. For examples, 16 ms is faster than 25 ms and is therefore less visible image artifacts. Slower response times can cause ghosting or streaking effects.
