A Theory of Justice: Original Edition

Though the "Revised Edition of A Theory of Justice", published in 1999, is the definitive statement of Rawls's view, so much of the extensive literature on Rawls's theory refers to the first edition. This reissue makes the first edition once again available for scholars and serious students of Rawls's work.  more

Rawls and Nozick - the American Pair

You can get a wonderful overview of this book on Wikipedia. So, rather than try to provide such an overview here, let me offer a few comments on what reading along these lines has meant to me. Rawls book is an outstanding logical...

essential work of philosophy

the physical book itself is fine, but i really wish they wouldn't make books so large. i suppose it's a price issue, but i would much prefer this to be in two volumes. my hands get tired from holding such an unwieldy book for so long!

Accessible and important development in liberal thought

A Theory of Justice is surprisingly accessible, even to those of us without extensive training in philosophy. Rawls briefly examines two of the most influential Western liberal philosophers (Locke and Mill), and then proceeds to...

Good Book, but lacks the light of reason

To begin with I believe this is a very good book, if somewhat lacking in logic, and should be read no matter what your political or philosophical persuasion is. Said that, this book has one obviously, at least to me, major flaw. When he...

The Impossible Attempt of Reconciling the Ideal with the Realistic

The amount of praise given to this work does not surprise me given that there is a widespread, yet subtle, socialist movement in America as well as in Europe. Despite this, the book is a failed attempt at reconciling the ideal with...
