The Sabbath

Elegant, passionate, and filled with the love of God's creation, Abraham Joshua Heschel's The Sabbath has been hailed as a classic of Jewish spirituality ever since its original publication-and has been read by thousands of people seeking meaning in modern life. In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel introduced the idea of an "architecture of holiness" that appears not in space but in time Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the material things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that "the Sabbaths are our great cathedrals."

Sabbath Renewal

This is a beautifully, beautifully written book that renews the soul and enhances one's appreciation of the Sabbath. The book can be read in one sitting, although one misses out by not taking the time to think about each chapter. For those of us who serve Congregations as clergy, reading this...

Poetic Prose

To be honest, I didn't enjoy this book. In fact, I only continued reading it because my wife gave it to me. The problem isn't so much the message, but rather how the book is written. I prefer a much more academic style of writing. I appreciate precision and clarity, so I struggled mightily...

Not Just For Jews

I am not Jewish but have always contended that God hallowed the seventh day when he finished creation - there were no Jews on earth when He did that. He never retracted that action in His word so I feel it remains holy to this day, regardless of when people choose to assemble for worship. After...

Profoundly moving

Rabbi AJ Heschel's book, "The Sabbath" is a short, but densely profound book. Even if you know the abriged version, i.e. the thesis, themes and reasoning, the religiously philosophic prose not only captures the author's feelings for/about Shabbat, but can also be a vehicle for self-reflection....

The Sabbath and Sacred Time

The Sabbath (2005) is a genuine gem of a book. It is written to help explain the value and importance of the Sabbath, but in the process becomes a universal touchstone for learning about Sacred Time. The great philosopher Abraham Joshua Heschel has managed to write a book for the Jewish...

To Face Sacred Moments

Abraham Heschel is one of the most respected Jewish scholars of the 20th century and of an orthodox view friendly to Christian belief. He was an active participant in the Civil Rights movement and wrote a seminal study called The Prophets and a number of works of reflective and broad scholarship....

Approachable Philosophy

Heschel wrote this book for us all. His metaphorical descriptions of the Holy Day are vivid and tangible. This book is more entry level than others he has written. Though most of his philosophy is comprehensible, in this book he allowed his readers to relish the simple harmony of the weekly...
