Great little color unit
I've had this unit for a little over a year and really like it with a few exceptions.

We are Geocachers and We Love the Magellan Explorist 500
We have been using the 500 for a few months now, and we found it to operate flawlessly. It replaced my older SporTrak and it's a 100% difference, for not that much more money. Don't pay over $200 for this unit. I have seen it advertized for $300 + an
PROS: Easy "Windows" type format- AAA Bats- Great Color Screen
CONS: cords system clumsy - but it's minor. Unit is worth it

Magellan Explorist 500
I love this unit and am sorry magellan chose to discontinue the model in favor of the 500 LE (which uses standard batteries instead of the rechargables).
PROS: Compact. Great for Geocaching.
CONS: Discontinued

batt. life under worst condition 2-3 hours
Turn backlight down for extended batt. life. AAA should be AA.(easier to find) Added 2GB SD card. Map size limit 122MB approx. US map can be broken down to multipul 122MB segments and loaded on the SD card. Screen cover is not as scratch resistant...
