Preludes and Nocturnes (The Sandman, Vol. 1)
"Wake up, sir. We're here." It's a simple enough opening line--althoughnot many would have guessed back in 1991 thatthis would lead to one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comics of the second half of the century. In Preludes and Nocturnes, Neil Gaiman weaves the story of a man interested in capturing the physical manifestation of Death but who instead captures the King of Dreams. By Gaiman's own admission there's a lot in this first collection that is awkward and ungainly--which is not to say there are not frequent moments of greatness here. The chapter "24 Hours" is worth the price of the book alone; it stands as one of the most chilling examples of horror in comics. And let's not underestimate Gaiman's achievement of personifying Death as a perky, overly cheery, cute goth girl! All in all, I greatly prefer the roguish breaking of new ground in this book to the often dull precision of the concluding volumes of the Sandman series. --Jim Pascoe more

- Fantastic series
This is a review for Sandman 1, and I will refrain from commenting on the rest of the series too much, but I feel that I need to say that this is a fantastic debut to an incredible series. I was drawn in from the first chapter of this...

- I have heard so much...
I needed to see what the hubbub was about. I was not engaged by this first entry in a praised series. The story was disjointed. The reader a mere observer. Why would one care about this character? I need a reason to go on.

- My all time favorite long graphic series
I have just begun a re-reading of all of the Sandman volumes. I'm purchasing the current printings of the standalone volumes after having made what I now consider a mistake. I had gotten rid of my earlier Sandman books to buy the...

- Excellent Book
This story is one of the best comics I have ever read. I am typically a follower of the superhero genre of stories. This book portrays a completely new comic experience with me. The story is deep and fulfilling. The story also gives...

- Good but Not Great
I bought the entire Sandman series based on two things: I am a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's novels and the reviews of the readers. To tell you the truth, I am not that impressed. The art work is not that great and the story lines are not as...
