Plato: Republic
Since its publication in 1974, scholars throughout the humanities have adopted G M A Grube's masterful translation of the Republic as the edition of choice for their study and teaching of Plato's most influential work. In this brilliant revision, C D C Reeve furthers Grube's success both in preserving the subtlety of Plato's philosophical argument and in rendering the dialogue in lively, fluent English, that remains faithful to the original Greek. This revision includes a new introduction, index, and bibliography by Reeve. more

Reason allows us to live for something
I read G. M. A. Grubb's translation of Plato's Republic for a graduate philosophy class. I paid close attention to Plato's thesis of courage in his Republic, which I expound below. I found Grubb's translation to be the best of several I read. Plato's project in the Republic is to form the...

who am I to even rate this book?
I spent over a month reading this book carefully as I am a complete beginner in philosophy, and honestly it was rather intimidating at first, but I found the experience surprisingly manageable and pleasant not to mention educational. I also read the introduction before reading this book, and...

Plato sees an impeccable republic that gracefully glides on the cataract of wisdom.
Most people associate Plato with the term platonic friendship, which is based on reciprocal understanding. Who is Plato? Why this magnificent idiom is attributed to him? This book will answer these questions. Believed to have been born in 428 BCE, Plato was an earnest student of Socrates. So...

Good
it wasn't as new as I thought it would've been but it was still good condition. I was satisfied with duration of time it to be delivered to me and overall, i would say very good.

The ultimate Socratic dialogue?
"The Republic" is Plato's classical utopia, and perhaps one of the most controversial political texts ever written. It's so absurd that some people deny that Plato really meant it! Strange Aristotle never noticed. And yet, those who believe that "The Republic" shouldn't be taken literally...

Understand the strengths and weaknesses of the Griffith translation
This version of the Republic (translated by Tom Griffith) is pleasant and readable; it definitely has its moments and would probably be a good way to first encounter the dialogue. But do not use it for serious study, since the translation can be quite free and sometimes confusing. For instance,...

Classic Read
Of course, Plato's work is nothing short of timeless. However, I recently found a hard-paperback version of this book that I would have liked to have more than this flimsy paperback format.

Best Translator of Plato
Grube is the most accurate and faithful translator of Plato. Unlike most other translators, in particular the horrendous Allan Bloom, Grube was both a first rate Greek scholar and had no ax to grind. You are always in good hands with one of his translations.

Callicles
Grube's translations are THE best; a shame that there are not more dialogues translated by him. A good edition. Get the white covered Cooper complete dialogues if you want more.

The Rhetoric
Most people know this book by title, not by content. I must admit reading this book is not for the faint at heart. Rhetorics will be thrown in your face as if it is common language and some sense of historical background on the Greeks may help as well. But this shouldn't hold you back from reading...
