Pillars of the Earth

Without question, The Pillars of the Earth is the best book I have ever read. I have a doctorate in education and have read thousands of fine books in my life. Reading the book was exactly like watching a movie because of the clarity of the images that Ken Follett painted in my mind. I can...

Good Story, Fantastic Narration

I enjoyed this book in audio format. I really love John Lee as a narrator. Pillars has been on my list for a long time, so when I saw that Mr. Lee narrates, I went for the audio version. For audio, I am learning that there are 2 components: the story and the narration. I give the story 4 of 5...

Interesting but Hard to Get into to

My Boss gave me this Book and said that I would Absolutely Love it. Having felt a Need to Read it I started and while I didn't hate it, it's something I would only recommend to select people. The beginning was somewhat confusing as it takes a while to get used to jumping into another characters...

What's all the hype about? It's only okay

I would have liked to give this two and a half stars, because though I can't say "I liked it" the "Did not like it" doesn't quite fit either. I have enjoyed Ken Follett in the past, "Eye of the Needle" comes to mind, and when two sisters whose editorial opinions I trust, and a brother who is very...

Well woven story.

This is a well written story that stays with you like oatmeal. It starts with Tom builder and his family. They are starving, Tom is looking for work and his wife is pregnant with their third child. The characters are well developed, very interesting and human. Everything in the story comes...

A bang on effort, mostly

Follett has told a good story about a building. And the building is this story's main character. For those who might be turned off by this description of the book, don't worry: this is a building that rises amid a constantly swirling storm of sex, violence, scandal, and general mayhem. The book...

A bit clunky, but a good long Romp full of Anachronisms

Sure it was a bit fluffy but I was up for a long romp of fantasy. I considered it loosely historical fiction. I did cringe at the vast number of anachronisms but it made it easier for the average person, I suspect, to relate to the novel. I also found the sexual stuff to have far too much detail,...

An incredible saga

One word: WOW. I was getting a pedicure and my pedicurist recommended this book to me when she saw I was reading from my Kindle. I downloaded it right away, mostly to appease her, and ignored it for a month - then I started it 5 days ago. Never have I lost so much sleep!! What a book! So...

Puh-leeze

Oh my God, will this book never end? Starting with Follet's masturbatory explanation, in the Preface, of how and why he wrote this book (do we really care about this? "...it is my best book, and you honored it".... yuk) to the last sentence on page 973 (yes, that's nine HUNDRED and seventy-three...

Surprisely liked the book but ending was boring

I didn't think I would like this book because I usually don't read historical fiction but surprisingly, I did. The characters were very well thought of and came to life as you read. You will find yourself hoping the best for the heriones and wishing bad things will happen to the bad guys. The...
