The Pillars of the Earth

From: $8.20

Ken Follett had long been a staple of the bestseller lists for his novels of intrigue and espionage. Then came The Pillars of the Earth, a grand novel of epic storytelling that readers and critics quickly hailed as his crowning achievement. Now, The Pillars of the Earth is available for the first time to a new audience of readers, in this attractive new trade paperback edition.

In 12th-century England, the building of a mighty Gothic cathedral signals the dawn of a new age. This majestic creation will bond clergy and kings, knights and peasants together in a story of toil, faith, ambition and rivalry. A sweeping tale of the turbulent middle ages, The Pillars of the Earth is a masterpiece from one of the world's most popular authors.

"A novel of majesty and power...Will hold you, fascinate you, surround you." --Chicago Sun-Times

"A towering tale...There's murder, arson, treachery, torture, love, and lust...A good time can be had by all." --New York Daily News

"Touches all human emotions...truly a novel to get lost in." --Cosmopolitan

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 17, 2008 Type: User Review it's about the writing

I read the whole thing! Now I can give it a single star. You can only throw so many rocks at your characters--Follet heaves a catapult fuly loaded at them all. (The Fleece Fair nearly killed me, too.) What wore me out the most was the constant...

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 17, 2008 Type: User Review Didn't see the dedication to William Golding ..

The central plot of The Pillars of Earth is eerily similar to William Golding's riveting 1964 novel "The Spire" - fittingly described by an Amazon reviewer as "One of the finest novels in the English canon". I recommend you go with the original.

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 17, 2008 Type: User Review waste of time

I don't care about historical accuracy - I was looking for a story with strong characterization. Tom's character was interesting - so was his 'girlfriend' - but too little was devoted to this part of the story. The 'gratuitious sex and violence'...

I couldn't put this book down for the 3 days it took me to read it. Its large size may scare off some readers thinking this may be a boring, drawn out historical novel. This has it all: suspense, drama, intrigue, passion, revenge and tons of plot...

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 14, 2008 Type: User Review Catherdral Ping Pong

I had a mixed reaction to Pillars.

It is the story of the people working for and against the construction of a 12th Century Cathedral. I ended up feeling like the entire book was a game of ping-pong with the cathedral flying back and...

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 10, 2008 Type: User Review Not recommended

I purchased this book several months ago and finally got around to reading it. Although several characters (Aliena and "Witch Ellen") caught my attention, overall the book lacked eloquence and I had a hard time trudging through some parts of it....

From: Amazon Posted: Jun 10, 2008 Type: User Review Gripping, Exciting Novel

This novel started off very slow for me. I had a hard time digesting the story and really staying interested in what going on.

That all changed very quickly after the 3rd or 4th chapter.

After the main characters are...

As I read this book, something felt so familiar to me about it--so I checked when it was published: a long time ago! I already read it! No problem, though...it's plenty good enough to want to read several times over. Everyone gets something...
