Suite Francaise

Beginning in Paris on the eve of the Nazi occupation in 1940. Suite Fran?aise tells the remarkable story of men and women thrown together in circumstances beyond their control. As Parisians flee the city, human folly surfaces in every imaginable way: a wealthy mother searches for sweets in a town without food; a couple is terrified at the thought of losing their jobs, even as their world begins to fall apart. Moving on to a provincial village now occupied by German soldiers, the locals must learn to coexist with the enemy?in their town, their homes, even in their hearts.

When Ir?ne N?mirovsky began working on Suite Fran?aise, she was already a highly successful writer living in Paris. But she was also a Jew, and in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. For sixty-four years, this novel remained hidden and unknown.

A Unique experience

This book was written by a woman as she lived during the time it took place. Interesting, obviously, to read about the resulting chaos, and eventually, life settling down to a "new normal" as the Germans occupied France. I found the Appendices amazing - to read the author's own letters, and...

A fascinating read for a novelist

Suite Francaise is unfinished so I can't judge it as I would a completed novel. Author Irene Nemirovsky envisioned a story in five parts but only two were finished before she was deported to Auschwitz, where she died in August 1942. I began this book as a "pleasure" read but within a few pages...

The emotional dimension of war

History frequently suprises us. The best History books can give us a clear idea of the theater of war: what politicians decided, what strategists did, what happened during operations, and the tactics of armies. But none of those books tells us what happened to individuals, to each person who...

Superb

This is a work of fiction, although there seems to much historical truth included in this work. This was to have written in five parts, yet the writer was arrrested and put to death in a concentration camp after completing the first two parts which comprise this work. The first part takes place...

Suite Francais review

Eztremely well written book, but sometimes became repetitive in story line. Would recommend it partly as a lesson in World War II history and partly as interesting fiction.

The Occupiers You Know...

Many others have already written of the amazing nature of this book: two insightful novellas written about the second World War...not in retrospect, but as it was unfolding. As if the achievement of a well written reflection on contemporaneous events were not enough, the circumstances surrounding...

constantreader

This book was recommended to me by a friend who read it for her book club. The book was interesting and held my attention the entire way through. But the ending was horrible. No epilogue. I found myself frantically searching through the discussion questions to see if I had somehow missed the...

Just lovely and honest

A remarkable, fluid, enthralling book about WWII written by a French Jew (who ended up being shipped off and killed in a concentration camp). It was published some 50 years posthumously. She paints a detailed portrait of the villagers when the Germans invade as well as the mass exodus from Paris....

Suite Francaise

I have only one complaint. I understood there was some underlining in the book, but it was more than some, an awful lot and in ink so it was very disconcerting to read. It came in timely manner, and all else was fine.
