Outlander

The year is 1945 and Claire Beauchamp Randall, a former British combat nurse, is on holiday in Scotland with her husband, looking forward to becoming reacquainted after the war's long separation. Like most practical women, Claire hardly expects her curiosity to get the better of her. But an ancient stone circle near her lodgings holds an eerie fascination, and when she innocently touches one of the giant boulders, she's hurtled backward in time more than two hundred years, to 1743.

Alone where no lady should be alone, and far from the familiar comforts of her other life, Claire's usual resourcefulness is tested to the limit. The merciless garrison captain so feared by others bears an uncanny resemblance to the husband she has just left behind. Her own odd circumstances expose her to accusations of witchcraft. And the strands of a political intrigue she doesn't understand threaten to ensnare her at every turn.

But of all the perils her new life holds, none is more disquieting than her growing feelings for James Fraser, the gallant young Scot she is forced to marry for her own protection. Sworn by his wedding vows to keep her from harm, Jamie's passion for Claire goes beyond duty. As she struggles with the memories of another lifetime, she is forced to make an agonizing and fateful choice, and learns ultimately that a man's instinct to protect the woman he loves is as old as time.  more

Wow! I'm hooked!!!!!!

I stumbled across this book on Amazon after reading and loving "The Time Traveler's Wife". It had a lot of good reviews so I decided to give it a try. I'll admit, when I first started reading it the whole book seemed a bit daunting: not only is it a long novel but the pages are very thin and...

Don't waste your time!

I won't give a run down on the characters or set up of the novel because so many people have already done that, however this is truly a love or hate book and in my case I hated it. The author has attempted to cover three basic conflicts in the one book, any one of which would have been enough,...

Overhyped book

I bought this book because I heard about how great it was and everyone kept raving about it. Boy was I disappointed. I was so bored. The book is way too long and drawn out. I cannot believe that there are several more books about these same characters. I could not get into it at all. I skimmed...

Not your typical bodice ripper

If you are reading this review, you probably already have an idea what this book is about - Claire, an English nurse vacationing with her husband in Scotland in 1945, miraculously time-travels 200 years back. She finds herself in a midst of Scottish clan politics, gradually gets accustomed to...

Does not stand out from the pack

This is a good epical historical novel about sex, romance, war, and adventure, but does not soar beyond the average of the pack. As I read other novels of the genre, I conclude this one does not qualify among the best. The setting is Northern Scotland, our heroine Claire, who after touching some...

5500+ pages later...still in LOVE

This book is phenomenal, the entire series is so captivating. I have read a lot of the negative feedback to question myself as to why I do not have these same feelings about the book. As to the sexual content of the book. It is romance set in the 1700's..it is far from smutty. Those who find it...
