My French Whore

The beloved actor and screenwriter?s first novel, set during World War I, delicately and elegantly explores a most unusual romance.? It?s almost the end of the war and Paul Peachy, a young railway employee and amateur actor in Milwaukee, realizes his marriage is one-sided.? He enlists, and ships off to France.? Peachy instantly realizes how out of his depth he is?and never more so than when he is captured.? Risking everything, Peachy?who as a child of immigrants speaks German?makes the reckless decision to impersonate one of the enemy?s most famous spies.
?
As the urbane and accomplished spy Harry Stroller, Peachy has access to a world he could never have known existed?a world of sumptuous living, world-weary men, and available women.? But when one of those women?Annie, a young, beautiful and wary courtesan?turns out to be more than she seems, Peachy?s life is transformed forever.

A great short read

This book is short and easy to get through, but you will be sorry it is over so soon! The main character is unknowingly witty and warm. There are many funny bits but also romance and love. I enjoyed this little book.

Charming and Delightful Read

This was a delighful little read. I couldn't get over how easy it was to fall in love with the characters, and to faithfully and attentively follow the story. Front to back, the book was spectacular and I now know Wilder has talent on and off the screen. Kudos.

Easy read by Gene Wilder

Gene Wilder has a gift of story-telling in a easy to read way. Characters are enduring and yet flawed as we all are. Enjoyable weekend read.

Life, My First Time by Skip Donahue

There are long novels and short ones. I like both for different reasons. A good novel (long or short) always make me want to lay down my pencil and give up trying. This short novel is a perfect example of how one can say so much with so few words.I knew this book was special as soon as I saw it....

Where's the book...?

Yes, I know this has been mentioned several times, but it's worth repeating -- er, Gene... where's the rest of the bloody book? I am an incredibly slow reader, devoting 15-20 minutes to reading before I go off to dream land at night -- I finished this book in three 15-20 minute sessions -- I'm...

I'm a pretty slow reader, by the way.The Review:First of all, the title is brilliant. This story is of a forced case of...

A Very Sensual Nuance!!!

Though the novel (length-wise) lacks a certain depth, the sensual interchange between Peachy and Annie is very provocative even in something as simple as a haircut. All of Wilder's works since the Richard Pryor days, seem to have this since of sensitivity that empathizes with the human...
